Below are the figures that I obtained by plugging in the published velocity figures from the Federal ammunition Companys Website into the Taylor TKO Value Calculator at the Sisk Rifle Website.
Since Federal is the only company producing ammunition for the 338 Federal I used the velocity figures from their 308 ammunition to compare.
So either this Taylor TKO thing is total crap or there would appear to be some edge in killing power when using the 338 federal and the most popular weight bullets for that caliber and the .308 Winchester and the most popular weight bullets for that caliber with factory ammunition
Taylor TKO Values, as taken oof the Sisk Rifles Website
(.308 Winchester) Federal 180 Grain Nosler Partition Muzzle @ 2740 TKO = 21 100 yards @ 2551 TKO = 20 200 yards @ 2370 TKO = 18 300 yards @ 2196 TKO = 17
(.308 Winchester) 165 Grain Barnes TRX Muzzle: @ 2650 TKO = 19 100 yards @ 2420 TKO = 17 200 yards @ 2201 TKO = 15 300 yards @ 1994 TKO = 14
(.338 Federal) Federal 185 Grain Barnes TSX Muzzle: @ 2750 TKO = 24 100 yards @ 2497 TKO = 22 200 yards @ 2257 TKO = 20 300 yards @ 2030 TKO = 18
(.338 Federal) Federal 210 Grain Nosler Partition Muzzle: @ 2630 TKO = 26 100 yards @ 2412 TKO = 24 200 yards @ 2204 TKO = 22 300 yards @ 2007 TKO = 20

Folks have about 100 ways to judge "killing power"
Among the variables people try to evaulate are
velocity mass sectional density cross section
There ate probably a couple more..bullet construction and the prperties of exapansion and penatration get a lot of air play and are likely quite important but harder to quanitfy.
I am sure you can look up the TKO formula but it looks like is gives more value to bullet weight and possibly cross section than do some other methods. Many folks use energy as a reference but energy is a formula that give quite a bit of importance to velocity as compared to some other formulas.
of course we all know the "magic Bullet" to killing power is shot placement

I guess I am wondering, since there are so many ways of figuring killing power, and checking out some of the posts around here certainly prove that, should I just stick with empirical evidence from the field and forget the whole mess of: Throckmorton's 3rd Law OF Minutia?

As I just noted on the .338-06 thread, the Taylor KO formula was designed for use on SOLID BULLETS and shooting elephant in the head. Despite this, many people insist on applying it to expanding bullets and other game.
Also, many African PH's have found the TKO formula to be bullshit, like any other formula that supposedly predicts bullet performance on game.

JB Well so much for TKO, even if I did plan on shooting an elephant in the head, I will file that under more useless information. Thats what you gotta love about this site, where else would I have found this information out. Thanks, Mule Deer Paul W.
