Just purchased a new Remington 870 express super mag for turkey and duck hunting. It came with a modified choke. I was thinking about picking up a full choke to use for turkey hunting. I heard that some chokes will not fit. Think it was probore but maybe rem-choke. Im not really sure. Can anyone tell me which is compatible or are they both. Do I need a full choke if I shoot a 3 1/2 inch shell?
Full choke needed? Depends on how far you want to shoot. In my opinion, if you stay under 35 or so yards, you’ll be fine with a mod. I mostly bow hunt turkeys but have killed some stone dead with a mod choke and 2.75” shell at 30-35 yards. Marketing has tried to convince hunters that you need 3.5” shells with multi size tungsten shot and a super tight choke to kill turkeys. That’s total bs. Good luck on your hunt.
Look on the barrel, the choke type will be marked on the barrel. It should also be marked on the choke tube itself as well as in the owner's manual. Failing all of that, a quick check of the Remington website will tell you which system to buy.
As for chokes for turkey, it is up to you. Depending on the circumstances and particular gun I use Modified on the open end all the way to a tighter turkey choke on the tight end. I guess I use the turkey choke most often these days as the tight pattern helps keep stray pellets out of the body of the turkey at close range. The choke I use is determined by the maximum distance I expect a shot to be offered- the length of the shell has no bearing in the equation. The type of shot in the load can be a factor as some can pattern pretty tightly out of a given constriction compared to lead but that is more a concern for waterfowl than turkey in my opinion.
Look at the places mentioned earlier for your choke type, you will find it there. As for what choke constriction to buy you are on your own as that is as individual of a preference as buying shoes. Most end up with a handful of chokes as they search for the "right one" but such was unheard of 50 years ago and they killed plenty of birds back then.
Thanks for your info. There wasn't any choke description on gun barrel but I did find a sticker on outside of manual that said it had a modified choke. But only that. I'm guessing that it takes a rem-choke and not a probore. I read where the threads that are located on the chokes are what makes it fit or not. Found this label on box that says rem choke.
Pro-bore chokes will not fit in your 870. It uses old fashion, standard Rem-chokes. That is a good thing because there are a TON of options and they are generally cheaper.
