I have a built .30/.338 Lapua that is the basis for a very long range prairie dog rifle. It will ultimately be a straight .338 Lapua when that barrel comes. Being an older man, my vision is not what it used to be so I want all the optic clarity I can buy. I will spend up to $4000 or so if necessary. With that kind of budget, what would you all suggest? Thanks

Going to have to be a consistent .2 or better rifle to hit prairie dogs at mile, no?

I would rather spend $4K on a magical device that plots the vagaries of the wind over that mile between me and a prairie dog.

First you will need a Post . Tie the biggest , fattest Pdog you can find to that Post ( time of flight and those moving Pdogs must be minimized ) . Shoot early in the Morning to avoid Heat Waves , and face into the Wind on a very calm day . Get a Kahles or S&B , or Valdada , Trijicon , etc. Scope with at least 50X Max Magnification and lob those Bullets until you hit that unlucky Pdog . Just kidding , but that will be quite a challenge . I once got a Texas Pdog at 942 Yards with a Swift , but I won't say how many Shots it took . Everyone knows things are bigger in Texas !

Sightron SIII 8-32x56 Long Range. Put the money savings towards ammo and a Sham-WoW rag to keep the barrel cool. 😎

Yea, the Hubble will probably do it, but I think you'll probably have to bump up that $4K budget just a bit for a Hubble clone. Now as far a rings and bases are concerned, I can't even start to make a recommendation that'll mount that one. RJ

What you really need to get is REAL. A mile shot on a prairie dog?
I'd rather die in a BAD gunfight than a GOOD nursing home.

What you really need to get is REAL. A mile shot on a prairie dog? That may be fair to say but why shouldn't he pursue it? I suspect one hit in twenty will be hard to achieve but it would be fun!

What you really need to get is REAL. A mile shot on a prairie dog? The same has probably been said to anyone who has ever pushed a limit in human history. A flying machine? Get real. The moon? Get real. 100 oz steak in less than an hour? Get real. It's not something anyone is likely to consitantly do at our current time with current technology, but it wasn't really that long ago that one could have said that of shots past a few hundred yards. Push boundaries.
