I used to backpack quite a bit but now I just dayhike and hunt deer. I always used to carry a folder, usually a 4in Cold Steel Voyager, but have recently "found" sheath knives. I've bought 3 Bark Rivers in the last 3 months (Drop Point Hunter, PSK EDC and FW Fox River) and am thinking of getting a Mini Aurora. Back when I carried a folder, it was usually clipped to my pocket. What is the best way to secure a sheath? My daypacks have padded hipbelts with pockets on them. They are too wide to thread a sheath on. Do you attach it to the shoulder straps or what? I'm new at this and at a loss.

A knife in a pack or attached to a pack can get separated from its user. I wear mine on my belt.
Backup blades are in kydex sheathes in the pack.

I really like Dozier's kydex sheaths, both the horizontal and the Wilderness styles.

Baldrick lanyards work well, especially when the knife has a fire kit.

I was celebrated with 35 years in MSR last year. Based on that, my standard is: If rafting, whitewater or otherwise a serrated fixed on my PFD vest strap. Otherwise, a folder in my pocket, or a necker... with fixed blades in my pack.

If hiking or hunting with a pack (and most everyday doing everything) I have a smaller neck knife in a kydex sheath. With a pack on it's usually outside my shirt, under the chest strap (or under the HPG bag is I'm wearing one). I keep my main fixed blade in my pack. Belt knives don't work to well for me when using a pack with a hip belt to carry weight.

I rarely carry a sheath knife but when I do it's on my belt. I much prefer a folder for most uses though, including hunting/field dressing game.

I just always have a folder in my pocket and other knives go into my pack. I do not carry on my belt as it tends to interfere with other items (pack belt, gun holster, etc)

A horizontal sheath (in the vertical position) on the lower part of the shoulder straps works well.

I like a 4-5" sheath knife on my belt. There are times when a handy knife with a decent blade is useful. But that isn't likely to be the game processing knife. That might well be in my pack.

A sheath under a pack belt makes no sense and is really uncomfortable.

I've only ever carried sheathed knives in the top pocket of my pack. If I take the knife out of the sheath I put the sheath into the same pocket so I don't risk losing it.

your knife is the last thing you want to be separated from. I often carry a fixed blade in a cross draw, tilted or horizontal sheath. I also like a horizontal or vertical dangler. Larger blade can be accommodated with a baldric carry rig.

I've decided to sell a couple of my Bark Rivers, if anyone is interested. They are in the classifieds. I'm keeping the one that'll do the best for dressing a deer and getting rid of the other two. I'm going to stay with folders for hiking. It's the most convenient.

I don't get to make one for myself very often, but this is one I made a few years ago that I kept. It stays on my belt if I'm in the field or woods. It is never kept or carried in a backpack. I don't want to have to hunt for it if I need it in a hurry.

I agree with a lot of the others. A folder w/ pocket clip in my pocket and at least 2 fixed blade sheath knives in my pack.
