Thinking about bringing another pet into our home but I'd like to research my options beyond D&Cs.
Small adult only home with a crazy parrot and a yellow lab if that helps.
Thoughts please and a big thank you.

My suggestion was going to be a parrot, but then I see you already have one.

there was a 15foot reticulata python? up for grabs the other day. my daughter didn't want it for her twins. they've already got one snake, and have adopted off another one.
they've also done gerbils, and spotted rats. and cats.

Ferret if you want to drive the lab crazy, and aren't too attached to the parrot.
We had two rats as pets - or I should say my wife had one when I met her, then we got another one a few years later. They are clean and very intelligent and inquisitive little critters and while not exactly affectionate like a dog it would sit on her shoulder or snuggle in her sweater.
The daughter got tired of the second one after a while so it sat in a boring, sterile plastic cage alone all day with nothing to do and basically went crazy. It began clawing at itself, you'd come home and find it's chin bloody with its little paws bloody to the elbows. I finally sent it to rat heaven and while I've snuffed a big pile of rodentia through the years with nary a care that wasn't something I enjoyed doing.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

We have been married for over 48 years, and the only house pet we've ever had was a damned cat that our daughter's college friend conned us into keeping for a "few weeks" until she found a good home for her. A few weeks was over 10 years.
I'll never do that again. Don't want any animals in the house.....or fish....or snakes.....or anything. Once thought I might like a dog in the house, but after helping take care of my daughters dog when they were out of town, I very quickly changed my mind.

I won’t have an animal at all after having 6 to ten pointers for 25 years. They were in a kennel, but I’ve had enough.

Even the ones that have the scent glands removed smell...they’re very neat little critters but a ton of work...

I heard playboy bunnies make great pets. They get fat. They turn on you too. It's a toss up to see which happens first.

I heard playboy bunnies make great pets. For about a week. If you want an open ended learning experience, that will keep you occupied for the rest of your life, get an aquarium. The bigger, the better. I would not mess with anything smaller than about 90 gal. Maybe a 120 gal. Much like reloading, you can make fish keeping as complicated and interesting as you care to. Or you can just toss a few community specimens into the tank and observe the pretty colors. Much like shooting whatever Wallyworld has on sale.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.
