For the rec'r ring markings, had to crack the safes. (always looking for an excuse anyway) And I be adding another column to the spread sheet.

My memory is decent too but not photogenic. smile

I keep a list of the guns descriptions, serial numbers, etc., but like Rick I had to go to the safe to check the receiver ring makings.

I try to take detail pics of every one I acquire and keep them saved on my laptop with a folder for each model and a a folder within each model folder for each SN (in which I place the pics). This way I can open my folder rather than the safe.

Roy,

I keep an Xcell spreadsheet with make, model, caliber, etc. But I had to go to the safe for the roll mark.

Doug

p.s. Don, I'll bet everyone here is jealous of your safe!

Went and got sick and forgot to update the thread with the rifle and stamp. Sorry about that.

The stamp is:
SAVAGE
MODEL '99

The introduction of the 99 models in 1921 was accompanied by many ads which referred to the cased sets and others as the Model '99. This serial number at 237,574 is right at the same timeframe as those ads.

So is the quote a flaw, a short run of MODEL '99 stamps that were done in the fall of 1921, or ??

As we've seen, the MODEL 99 stamp didn't start for years after this rifle, if anything it should have a MODEL 1899 stamp. So it might have left the shop years late with a flaw...

I think it's correct. And is either just a one-off by somebody at the factory, or it was a very short run.

Here it is:

I've got 244xxx and I don't think there's anything on the top of the receiver, but I've got the lightfoot scope mount covering it so I'm not for certain. But I don't remember anything there.

Looking at the GB pics, I'm questioning whether the SN has been stamped over ... it's one of the deepest/widest I've seen. Also look at the round count window ... it sure looks round to me. Also, the top barrel marking is wrong for that serial number.

It shouldn't be blank, probably will say SAVAGE MODEL 1899. So far everything from 232,xxx to 280,xxx has that - except for the one in the picture above.

From 229,9xx on down, it's blank.
From 286,xxx on up it says SAVAGE MODEL 99.

Am I just reading the serial number wrong? Is it 337547? It sure looks like 237547..

But the barrel address is a style 8 from the 30's/40's.. Was thinking it was a early 99C, but if it's from the 30's.. what is it? Restocked 99H? Aha.. look at picture 4 and that forearm is screwy. So yeah, betting that's a bubba'd 99H. So looks like I was a decade off.

Don't recall ever seeing a SAVAGE MODEL '99 stamp from the 30's either, though.

I think 337547. If really a 20" barrel, then bba 99H like you say, if 22" it could be a 99E. The data above has SAVAGE over MODEL 99 showing up at 286k. That round-looking round count window still bugs me.

Thanks, Keith. That continues the pattern that the SAVAGE 1899 MODEL looks to have starting in late 229,xxx range. But we've had a gap that helps to fill.

If it's a C it has a fairly heavy barrel with a dovetailed front sight. The E has a much thinner barrel with a sight base that is integral to the barrel and a blade front sight that is held with a screw or a pin. It's very easy to distinguish the two if the photos include a pic of the front of the barrel.

That was the problem you couldn't see a good view of the front sight but did say the barrel was 20" so 99-E...and a very early one.

Does that stamp look different to anyone else?

Did you decide what serial range it is in?

Rick, it does look different. I thought it was 237,547 when I started the thread - but after the auction I looked again and figured out it was 337,547. So a later receiver stamp.

Yep.. which is why it threw me. But it's a 1931 gun. I've looked at several 99's in the 336,xxx range and 340,xxx+ range and none of them have the center mark.
