My lab is 14 and we are very close to that point. It sucks and there is no other way to look at it. I know how you feel. Fortunately, we've both been blessed with great dogs who've had long, happy lives. Best wishes to you both.

Damn, sorry to hear that man. Ive got one hunting buddy thats getting up there too. Definitely the worst part of having a dog, is that they do not live longer.

He's running strong and young again. Good Buster! Barry I am tearing up as I read this. I am truly deeply sorry. I have a very soft spot in my hardened old heart for dogs. I love them in a very special way. One day my wife looked at me loving on Shadow and said "I think you love her more than you do me." I have always been told that arguing with a woman is fruitless, so I said "who am I to argue with you." I'll be damned if I shouldn't have argued. She was genuinely displeased.

You did the right thing, rest assured. Thanks! Yeah, about 10 days ago he started a pretty steep decline. But he would have lots of times where he really enjoyed being around. I thought long and hard about it and told my wife that when I saw he wasn't wanting to be here, and having enjoyment, that it would be time. He crossed that line last night. Although I wasn't ready, Buster was.

I'm reading this at work, don't want to tear up. Reminds me of a Schnauzer I had in my youth. Mine was a mid-size, like a miniature bred a standard. Great dog. It's clear Buster was great too.

I was looking through photos from when my nephews were little, maybe ten, me and them were up on a Rev War battlefield site in NY State, the old heeler that still sleeps next to me every night was there too. Those same nephews, both out of college, in the Army and grown men were down here visiting a couple of months back, yet the life of that old dog has encompassed all of that span of years.
We don't really outlive our dogs, when they go they take a whole period in our lives with them.
Sorry for your loss Barry, great dogs are a gift from God.
