put a 9.3x62 cartridge in it and see if it goes all the way in. If it is the x57 version it will not. Is it the M46 or 146?

That's the problem, here on the east coast of Canada 9.3 ammo is almost non-existent or else I would. I am also unsure of the model

You need to post clear and detailed pictures.

In general, if it is a small ring pre-1898 style Mauser, it will probably be chambered in 9.3x57 and if it is a large ring 1898 style Mauwer, it will probably be chambered in 9.3x62.

you want useful info, post some pics.

Given the SN if it is a 96 based action it is probably a Model 46A. Does the stock have a Schnabel? Is it a 98? If a 98 with schnabel it is a Model 146. Both models were made in 9,3x57 but many have been rechambered so do a chamber cast to tell for sure.

Wrong. Most 96's and 98's were made in 9,3x57. But, both action types were made in 9,3x62 as well. There were several different models chambered in 9,3x62 but only the 46. 46A and 146 were chambered in 9,3x57. The 46AN, 246, and 649's were chambered in 9,3x62.

OK. Let me rephrase. Most of the pre-HVA Husqvarnas that I've seen have been at Simpson, LTD. All of the 9.3x57s that I've seen at Simpson's were small ring Mausers. All of the 9.3x62s that I've seen at Simpson's have been large ring Mausers with FN-built commercial actions. I haven't looked at Simpson's site for awhile, but I wouldn't expect to see anything different.

Yes it has a schnabel, and if I could figure out how to post pictures I'd post them

The Model 146 was an FN supplied Military style 98 action chambered in 9,3x57. Stock style was virtually identical to the small ring based M46A replete with Schnabel. The 246 was built on a 98 as well but chambered in 9,3x62 it looked identical to the 146. The M46AN was, as expected, a clone of the 46A but chambered in 9,3x62 and shod with a "special" antioxid barrel. The 649's were built on the "strengthened 96 actions as well as the Military style 98 and the Commercial 98 actions.

this is a 146 in 9,3x57:

As are these:

In this pic, the top rifle is a 649 on a commercial FN 98 action in 9,3x62

2nd from top is a Model 46AN on a 96 action chambered in 9,3x62,

3rd from top is a 46A in 9,3x57

and last is a 146 on a Military style 98 chambered in 9,3x57:

Not sure where you got the gun but it's a neat looking rifle. For all things 9.3 related Tradeexcanada is the best place to shop in this country.

Seeing as the 9,3x57 is essentially an 8x57 necked up, you can try an 8x57 case. If it chambers and slightly less than 1/8" of the case head protrudes from the breech, it is probably still chambered in 9,3x57. If the rim drops in flush with base or even slightly below, it was probably rechambered.

Just try and chamber a 30-06 round. If it won't go all the way in, it's a 9.3X57. smile
