Making it harder to register would stop them. If you had to jump through hoops every time you posted, people wouldn't bother.

That's now old technology, and the spammers have already figured out how to go around; they pay humans a penny or two per puzzle to solve them and they are in. It's an arms race. The latest technology is using AI to evaluate the on-line behavior of the computer filling out the form to determine if it is a "real" person. So, if you just came from Wideeners after ordering powder, you'd be in, if you just came from DU and Greenpeace, you would be denied access....... IMO, the easiest solution would be to give every member of some standing (say over a year), a "flush" button and allow them to just nuke any spam post, with abuse resulting in immediate and permanent loss of privileges. Of course, not sure if that would keep the sycophants in this place from resisting the temptation.
