I'm interested in using alkenet root to color the grain filling oil for a stock I'm doing. There is some info on the internet but not entirely clear or concise. If anyone has some suggestions I would greatly appreciate some help.

I'm planning on using either Permalyn products from Brownells or Seafin shipnshore product Dwayne Wiebe uses. He also sells the alkenet..

Thanks!

Soak the root in MS 'til you get the desired shade. Strain the solution and add it to your finish. Be aware that some finish mfgs say not to thin their product, but that's what you will be doing. I've done it more than a few times without adverse effects.

Or, stain the stock with the alkenet first and then apply your finish.

Wait for a while, someone will come along and disagree.

Thanks for all the info fellows.
I tried to call Mr. Wiebe today but he didn't pick up. I was hoping he would take a few moments to guide me.
I'm glad to here he is a patient and generous man with his time.

Art is so old he apprenticed with Tom Shelhamer in the old Niedner shop in Dowagiac, MI! He shot his first moose in Alaska 20 years before statehood.

(I hope I set a couple youngsters scurrying to Google "the math"!)

Well here is what the Daly's Ship n Shore sealer and Teak Oil looks like with the Alkanet infused for a couple of weeks.

Art, refresh my memory. Was that before old Tom hurt his hand firing that test round or after? I know you mentioned the matter here on the fire.

How many coats of the Alkanet did Duane recommend? I always am unsure about over or under doing it.
