I've read in the past that to get the best accuracy from hard cast bullets it's best to push a lead fishing weight of proper diameter through the bore and measure it. What is the best way to do this?

Oil the sinker, wooden dowel rod just small enough to fit the barrel, big rubber mallet.
The fewer the whacks the better.
I’ve never slugged mine, just bought some laser cast and loaded them up.
Mine shoots good with laser cast, dardas, etc .459’s but I stay 1600fps and under.
When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

Ive only used laser cast 405 grain. 458. I was in the process of ordering Montana Bullet works 405 grain and have a choice of diameters. I thought as long as I'm in no hurry I might as well slug it. So the next question is if it measures. 458 do I go .001 larger?

Generally speaking 1 to two thousandths above measured bore diameter, works real well! memtb

Shoot the largest bullet that will allow chambering without difficulty, Could be .458", .459", or .460". I've found .459" works well in most guns.

I size and lube all cast 45 bullets to .459 They shoot extremely well in my 45/70., '90 and ' 110.

My Guide gun has shot .459"s well, but I order .460"s when I can.
My favorite cast bullet for my .45-70 is the Beartooth Bullets Piledriver Jr. I like the Piledriver Lite in my .458 SOCOM, those are .459".

Thanks for the info, I measured the slug right at .458. I’ll order.459 and see how it goes.
