After calling Hornady and asking what the Muzzle-Velocity is going to be with that 250grain SST(.452diameter)=2050fps So what they made is a semi-automatic "muzzleloader firing saboted SST's". I'll stick to the DPMS LR-TAC20 308win if I need something larger than 223rem or 6.8SPC. Mike

My 50 beowulf is slow too. Impact is pretty hard. Much harder than any of my 308s hit. And I've seen more than a few moose dumped with it.
Don't discount big bullets at slower speeds.
Of course there is always larger and better.. if I need something bigger, there is the 50 cal in the safe...

But the bullet it uses is but 250grains. And my 45/70 and 50Alaskan have that nice flat nose coupled with 350+grains in the 45/70 and 450+grains in my Alaskan.
When I heard it proclaimed "Thumper" I envisioned "diameter + mass = dropper" ?
It just seem a little light for bear/boar. Mike

I'm not sure I care for the factory bullets in 50 beowulf, its why I always ignore factory loads, and load up what I want for what the round can provide.
I"m only shootin 275 currently in mine, but its a heck of a thump when it hits with the X bullet.
I suspect they went the way they did to flatten trajectory. Lots of other bullet options out there for that caliber. 458 socom is also very versatile.
OF course one has to ask, if you have a 45.70 etc.... what do we look at the 450 for? Unless its just one of those, I want one issues. Which I totally understand. Totally.
I won't shoot a plastic tipped bullet anyway....

rost, My eldest boy was looking at it real hard for hog-hunting in NC/SC/GA and for Black-Bear here at home.
I looked long and hard at a Beowulf(and am still looking)which I concider to be a more potent offering.
I'll just have to talk the boy into looking/reading more on the big-bore offerings available to him.

I am not sure at this time, that the 458 MIGHT be just a tad more versatile... FWIW, but the 50 speaks well, esecially with anything from 275 to 375 X..... Currently the 275s have run stem to stern on 100-150is pound pigs and deer.... No doubt of penetration. They smack hard when they hit. I will add though, I"ve yet to drop one on impact. They all run a bit, but never far. Of course I avoid all bone structure. I like meat.

The 450 Bushmaster and the 50 Beowulf are the ballistic twins of the 460 Smith and 500 Smith, respectively. I don't have a 450 but have the other three and have shot game with all using Barnes XPB's. The results were very impressive indeed. It's hard to say how a new specialty round like the 450 will do, but if it fails it won't be for lack of power.
We may know the time Ben Carson lied, but does anyone know the time Hillary Clinton told the truth?
