I'm wondering if there is a straight-wall cartridge wildcatted on a .30-'06 or .308 case (0.473" rim) that I could re-barrel a Mauser 98 to that would feed cartridges from the magazine? I've got a Ruger 77/357, so I don't have to convert the Mauser; but I would if it were a reasonable project, because I just like the Mauser better. What research I've done isn't encouraging. I've never had a wildcat rifle before, so it would be nice if there were already dies and pressure-tested loads available.

This has a 222 family head but is not a wildcat...350 Legend. Basically 223 basic brass (or nearly so) with 35 cal bullets. Winchester is making ammo for it. Came out at Shot this year kind of a SAAMI version of the 357 AR....

I think the 350 Legend would be wonderful in a Kimber M84, but getting it put together would probably take a long time to get ammunition or even brass for it.

I can't complain too much, though. It's wonderful to be able to use a rifle instead of the really awful slug shotguns I suffered with for years. The Savage 220 was a wonderful exception, but around $3 per shot was a real downside.

A 450 Bushmaster would be easy. Guys have been cutting 30-06 brass off at the shoulder and making rimless 444s too if you reload.

I figured on reloading. Is a rimless .444 (Marlin, I'm guessing?) pretty well established as far as being easy to reload for? I'd like to use cast bullets and 1800 fps would be plenty. Do you have to rework the action rails to get them to feed?

Google 444 rimless. I have played with the idea but have no hands on experience. If memory serves, the guys over at castboolits have played with it extensively.

I don't know the Ohio laws, but the 45 Raptor is legal here in lower MI. It is a rimless 460 S&W, with a case head diameter of .473". It is simply a cut off .308 Win case.

https://www.45raptor.com

Brass is available from Starline and you use 460 S&W dies for loading.

45 Raptor or 450 BM would be a hell of a lot better cartridge than the 350. The 350 is too big for a 223 case. Thats why they had to use a larger case head. So you can't use 223 brass or magazines.

In a bolt action there is no advantage of the Raptor over the 450 BM. They can both be loaded equally. ARs are what keeps the BM loaded to low levels.

Consider the 240 Wby case.

Those 45's are good choices and heavy hitters but the 350 will get the job done handsomely for Ohio. The 350 is not too big for the 223 case as it has been catted as the 357 AR for a few years now (on the 223 case) however Winchester kept the rim diameter the same but increased body enough to make it proprietary. A fella could buy basic Starline and have virtually the same thing but Legend ammo is readily available now (no brainer). CMMG has AR mags available as this is written, also AR barrels and turnkey Ruger Americans are coming on line making this a really easy way to have a straight walled setup that has more power than a 30-30 and is easily a 200+ yd. rig. The marketing department is making this one easy to do for folks in the straight all predicament...

The Ohio F&W web page explicitly names the rifle cartridges that are legal for deer hunting in Ohio. And apparently the list is updated as new cartridges come on the market.

Just asking... Given that they explicitly name the legal cartridges, are you still allowed to use a wildcat that is not on the list, if it fits the former case length criteria ?

That law changed. Now if it is legal for a pistol, it is legal for a rifle. Basically 35 Cal min, straight walled, there is a min length that I don't remember exactly but 9mm parabellum is illegal and 38 special is good to go.

Micky is correct.

The law changed last year.

I didn't know that the 350 Legend was readily available now. It probably would make more sense to barrel a short Remington or mini Howa action to the Legend. It would sure get done faster that way.

Edit: Any recommendations for gunsmiths that are routinely installing 350 Legend barrels?
