ARC and PLC are basically a insurance or hedge for crop prices that guarantee a minimum price. To a degree they influence over production of the insured crops.

I think the other big hitter is China modernizing and increasing crop yields. I China is the number one wheat producer now.

We have lost a lot of fruit and vegetable production in my lifetime because of imports. I hope that trend doesn’t continue. One thing is for sure, it’s not going to get better anytime soon.

the southern hemisphere whose climate is exactly opposite to north america (well not climate but growing season) allows trans-national shipments to be profitable.

chilean fruits & veggies available in the winter in the us is a god send. well sort of, if'n ya got the money to buy the stuff.

the thing now is incredibly complex, and does not minimize the number of people who starve, but attempts to do so.

it's not so much that we might be on the wrong track, but realizing the fact we don't know what the best track is.

I knew wheat ranchers in Eastern Wa, years ago-- that got Govt pay to not raise wheat.
Guess what-- they raised it anyway and sold it on the open market.

Yeah, clueless. Both my grandfathers and an uncle were dairy farmers. I grew up on farms, worked on farms. Many dairy farmers got paid to not produce milk. My uncle included. Can't imagine getting paid more to produce less myself.

Well, if the Chicoms are trying to play hard ball, going after MEGA country farmers to intimidate or scare Trump, what's wrong with taking some of that tariff money we getting from them and backfilling some of the loss they slapped on targeted producers, trying to manipulate domestic politics.

As for insurance every one has to have some if they are going to grow/market crops.

Hell bags of cotton seed cost almost 500.00 these days.
When farming a section of land it mounts up real quick and you have no way to know how much money you will get off it until the nut cutting is done.
