this is what I find ironic with all this legalized marijuana stuff anymore and just don't quite get that. Well I understand legitimate medical needs. But the recreational part I do not get. How do you measure a person's impairment alongside the road.

I worked with both the DUI driver and passenger in his vehicle at the time of the wreck for a lot of years.

A Henderson County man faces a second count of murder in connection with a Valentine's Day vehicle collision which led to the death of two men, one of whom was an off-duty firefighter.

Albert David Williams, 58, Spottsville, was indicted Tuesday by a Henderson County grand jury for murder in connection with the death of Michael Pritchett, who was a passenger in the vehicle Williams was driving. Pritchett died on April 22 from injuries he suffered in the collision, officials with the Henderson County Sheriff's Office said.

Williams was indicted in April for murder in the death of Henderson firefighter Jonathan Coomes, 29, and for driving under the influence (third offense). Coomes was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

In April, Williams had also been indicted on a charge of first-degree assault for the injuries Pritchett suffered.

However, after Pritchett's death, the Commonwealth's Attorney's office decided to resubmit the case to the grand jury, which in turn indicted Williams for murder.

The accident occurred on U.S. 60 around 5:20 p.m. Feb. 14 when the 2006 Dodge Ram truck driven by Williams crossed into the path of Coomes' 1989 GMC Sierra truck, authorities said.

Evidence at the scene indicated Coomes tried to avoid the collision, but was unable to get out of the way of Williams' truck.

"Man sentenced in DUI wreck that killed firefighter, passenger"

Quote

October 22, 2012 at 3:42 PM CDT - Updated June 28 at 10:29 AM

The driver who admitted to being drunk and causing a fatal crash in Henderson County was sentenced on Monday.
Albert David Williams pleaded guilty to murder charges in the Valentine's Day crash the killed Henderson firefighter Jonathan Coomes and Williams' passenger, Michael Pritchett.
On Monday, Williams found out how long he'll serve.

Williams was sentenced to 25 years in prison for each of the two murder charges. 14 News talked with Jonathan Coomes' mother who says no amount of time can make up for the future memories of the victims whose lives were lost.

"There will never be enough time," Leann Coomes said.

Monday, Coomes' family, friends, and Henderson firefighters gathered at Williams' sentencing to show support for Coomes.

"The world has lost something that they will never gain again," Leann said.

Jonathan's mother Leann even spoke to a full courtroom about the importance of driving sober, and how a person's actions can affect victims' loved ones left behind.

"He can't be there to help her with her math, make sure she gets home from that first date on time or walk her down the aisle," Leann said.

Commonwealth Attorney William Markwell says Williams's two 25 year prison terms will be served at the same time. Williams also received 365 days behind bars and a $500 fine for his DUI charge. A sentence the prosecutor calls, "a little more excessive than most."

"Many family and friends were effected by this and there were circumstances, particularly the drinking and speed that contributed to the large sentence," Markwell said.

Those we talked with just hope the situation teaches everyone never to drink and drive.

"That's what I've taught all my family. People should have enough common sense," Leann said.

"Hopefully, people will stop to think before they try to get on the highway under the influence," Markwell said.

The prosecutor says Williams won't be eligible for parole until 85 percent of his sentence is served.

Obviously the punishment isn't high enough, I work with a few guys who do it regularly.

And they feel it's ok, as long as they stick to the back roads.
The Pa rural backroads,
The ones that are one big lane wide, no cuts, no fill, just up down and around.
But you know, no cops, so it's fine.

Pfhuk the family they kill.

How many of those guys at your work have killed a family?

None yet!

But, if someone went downtown and fired a shot for every time they have driven drunk,
that person would be a no good SOB.

And that's how I see a drunk driver.
Loaded gun, town center, spinning a circle with his eys closed.
Cracking off rounds.

I will say that 80 to 90% of the local country bars around here have closed in the last 25 years.
The local sheriffs started just parking next door, and pick them off like fish in a barrel

I actually had a conversation with a business owner in a local mining town about this.

"I have to go to the township supervisors meeting tonight".

"Why"

"They hired a new cop, he has been marking tires in the clubs. Then watching for the cars
that are at the club a long time. Everyone's getting DWI's, and it has to stop. I know they
can't just fire him, but...."

Have you ever driven over the legal limit?

He should do that outside the gun show to make sure nobody bought a gun illegally.

If it saves one life.

Driving while intoxicated and/or under the influence of controlled drugs could also be comparable to owning a Pit Bull(s).

Some may get away with it for years or even forever without causing harm to anyone or anything else.
For some it's just a matter of when - not if.
And for some it occurs the first time out.

Basically, both are still a crap-shoot.

As always, YMMV.

Yep. My uncle was killed several years ago by a drunk driver while riding his Harley. Worst part is he did 2 tours in Saudi/Iraq back in the 90's and was a reserve cop here in Louisiana but got killed on a leisurely motorcycle ride by a 25y/o drunk driver. Kid was sentenced to 5 years and only server about 60% of his sentence. He's now walking around scott free and probably still drunk driving!

Local guy a few years ago had a couple of beers then rode his Harley. He was one block from a stop light so speed was not a factor. A guy turned left in front of him causing a fatal accident. Left turner didn't even get a ticket and it was his fault.
If that was opposite the left turner would have gone to prison.

WTF is fair about that?

Exactly. Where's the outrage?

Slaves get what they need. Free men get what they want.

Rehabilitation is way overrated.

Deflave,
Over the legal limit?

If I was checked every time I ever drove, maybe once.

I got my CDL 3 months after I turned 21.
I have to meet stricter standards than normal,
And would have lost my livelihood along with the fines.

But, it's just not necessary, either don't drink or don't drive.
Really simple stuff here.

I’m just trying to understand what we should do with all those people that have attempted it and never had a problem.
