I am not looking for any suggestions on spicing up a long term relationship, rather I am looking for some info on your shooting preferences. After you do some initial load workup and settle on a good load for your rifle at your determined zero distance what do you then do to put rounds downrange without getting bored? What type of targets are you shooting and what shooting positions? Shooting paper from 100 yards, while necessary to a point, can certainly get pretty monotonous and boring. I have access to a private range at a club where I am a member and we have 50, 100 and 200 yard targets so nothing with any really long range. I am planning on heading up soon with my son to shoot a few different rifles and want to try to keep it interesting for both of us. I was thinking of using some type of clay birds, water bottles and balloons but just wanted to get some other suggestions as well.

I started off with shooting steel. 8" round one's at 200. Gradually shrank the size of them to where I could shoot the 2" one's from the bench.

Well, I think I'm the same boat with many of the gun Loonys here.
I get a new/different gun ! I could have easily accepted 1,2, or 3 rifles in diff cartridges and covered my hunting needs B U T ..... A new or different rifle, handgun, or shotgun (not so much) plus the new powders and bullets we didn't have in the past always gives me or us new horizons. In the recent past I have acquired H 4350 and Rl 26 so I have a few NEW options to try out.
It works for me.

Find a place where you can shoot 500 + yards and learn to compensate for wind.

No no no. If I'm satisfied with the way it shoots I keep it, AND buy another one.

When boredom sets in, switch to cast bullets and start over again. It will humble you and your 1/2 minute paper puncher.

That's why I learned to Duracoat. Now a sandblaster to remove finish, some JB Weld to fix scratches/dings on the stock, some time and patience and it looks like new. Of course before I go through the labor I make sure it will shoot.

There are a variety of competitions around, at least there are here. Over the years I've competed in smallbore, fullbore (out to 1000 yards), IPSC (pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun), service rifle, field rifle and metallic silhouette. I've also shot a fair bit of sporting clays and some trap with the shotgun, and field archery (shooting animal replicas on a bush course).
Each has its attractions, and tends to develop particular skills. Fullbore for example is great for learning to read wind and mirage, service rifle (as shot here) is good for engaging a range of targets including movers from different positions, including snap, rapid and reloading on the clock.
Of course you could set up to do a good variety of practice on an informal range too. Things like unknown distances, different positions, and perhaps a bit of running around, double taps, timed exposures etc. are good practice for hunting. So is getting out and shooting some rabbits or pigs or whatever pests you might have.
