I think seminal technology generally is invented once, maybe twice, and then spreads around and gets modified in different ways by different people.

Just like Hollywood, some are fairly silly but a lot of them are pretty darn good (even with subtitles) with very high production values. Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery.
