If I wanted more air than the little 2Hp / 2.5 gallon compressor can deliver would it be worthwhile to plumb it into a larger tank?

I have an 80ish gallon stainless tank rated for 300 psi.

Would it be worth it or just pushing rope?

It would give you more air for a short while until the compressor couldn't keep up with demand. I have two compressors, one a small oil-less pancake type and one conventional oil compressor head with a larger 10 gal tank. When I need lots of air for spray painting or sand blasting I hook them up tandem and can get by.

That’s pretty much what I am trying to figure.

I guess I can run it and see. Upgrade the compressor if it can’t keep up.

It might not hurt anything.

You will get more volume at a given PSI.

One thing to consider though would be the duty cycle of that motor.

Yep.

The HP of the motor needs to match the capabilities of the compressor and the tank.

If you are over gunned on the tank, the compressor itself will work it's way to a short death... and you won't have the capability to keep up when you are using large amounts of air.

Good point. That little thing might ring it's own neck just trying to pressurize 80 gallons to 120+ PSI.

Thanks gentlemen.

You will spend a lot on cheap compressors trying to pump that kind of vol...much better off to get a good 5 hp compressor...and I'm not meaning a home depo 5 hp...there are trick ratings on those big box store compressors.... I have an IR t30 in my shop...it keeps up with everything I do...I have it set at 160 lbs...will fill semi tires to 110 no problem....I'm building a second compressor...I found a champion and will eventually hook up 2 compressors to run alternately.
If I were you look for an industrial grad compressor....you can find them pretty cheap especially if they are 3 ph....just change the motor...
I gave 600 for my t30 and 350 for the champion ...the champion compressor sells for over 3000 new for just the compressor head....

That my hair dryer wasn't gonna cut it! Lol.

Kingston laid some knowledge on me as to what to look for. One of my projects is a boat trailer I'm thinking of blasting and painting. Need mucho wind if I don't want to be there all year!
