... may have possessed a great deal of down-home, common sense, but he was sure a damned fool for letting Ellie get away.
(Actually, the real purpose of this post was to provide the opportunity for those who keep careful watch over such things to let everyone know that Andy Griffith was, at best, a fellow traveler of some sort, even though it has nothing to do with the observation about Andy Taylor.)
Not a real member - just an ordinary guy who appreciates being able to hang around and say something once in awhile.
Happily Trapped In the Past (Thanks, Joe)
Not only a less than minimally educated person, but stupid and out of touch as well.

Astute observation. He was indeed a far left liberal in real life.
I enjoyed Mayberry as much as anyone until one day, it occured to me just what ole Andy was up to. IIRC, the whole series was his production; he had full control of content.
Andy was the only adult in the room, surrounded by a bunch of "deplorables". He was sheriff, but didn't need a weapon, prevailed thru his superior intellect, righteousness and wisdom.
Everyone, the drunk, the barber, Barney, Goober, etc. were all flawed idiots. Andy was the only complete personification of virtue, the smartest man in the room and on the set..
Look at the libs, Isn't this their modus operandi, trying to impose their superior intellect over the rest of us, WalMart types...? Arrogant condescension then and now..
After that spark of insight, I could never enjoy the show as I previoiusly had. To me it was just a clever, aw-shucks, slick way of weaving the liberal mind set into our living rooms. It wasn't as blatent as what we see today, in fact it was pretty slick. Now, as I watch, I see all that symbolism and it ruins it for me.
Helen was a bitch, recognized that when I was young & didn't know the word.
Peggy was his challenge that he wasn't quite up to. A champion clay bird shooter.
Ellie was probably the one...... but,
From an early age, I kinda liked the "Fun Girls", an omen to my future??
If your referring to the episode where Andy looses the skeet shoot, that was not Peggy's character that played that part. It was another blonde gal named Karen in the show iirc... Thelma louise cousin
