Have any of you good folks ever found an old out of print book you wanted? If so, how, and where?

AMAZON. For me anyway. I really enjoy the search at book stores like Half Price books etc, but Amazon is great.

When I lived in Los Angeles there were several used book shops I visited about every two weeks. Found many old books I bought and still have. Interesting and informative are many of those old out-of-print books.

There are plenty of sellers that specialize in specific subjects as well as general used book sellers. A quick internet search using the terms specific to your search will yield lots of buyers and sellers in your subject area.
Visit local used book dealers. They are and incredible resource of information.
Usually every state has some sort of association of used book dealers. Get a list of their members and reach out to them.
Local libraries especially in quiet neighborhoods that are not overly busy are a great resource. They have access to networks that have the holding of libraries all over the country. They also have access to book dealers and are usually willing to help you find a book for purchase through the dealer.
As mentioned by others above Amazon, EBay and Abe are great resources as well.
Good luck with your search.

I have snagged many treasures off ebay, frequently for far less than I would pay in a bookstore. Yard sales and estate sales are also excellent hunting spots, along with thrift stores. Flea market book stands are almost entirely fiction paperbacks but even they deserve a look. I dont buy any books at all except for military and Old West history.

I have had good luck placing a wanted ad in the classified section her on the 'Fire and other gun related sites. Specialty book sellers and Amazon frequently ask a premium for out of print books which aren't necessarily scarce nor rare.

back before so much internet, I used to get a printed list from Blacktail Mountain Books in Kalispell, MT that specialized in outdoor books. I haven't used them in years, though.

Nothing beats a slow drift down overstuffed, teetering stacks, breathing old book mold and finding things you didn't know you were looking for. If you still have such a place in your Mayberry go now and buy something. When it's gone you'll realize how blessed you were. Failing that, AbeBooks.com

We travel a fair bit by car and avoid the Interstates when possible. Many small towns have used bookstores, often run as a hobby, and can be gems. I have found some great local history and even a few 1st editions. Generally we are on a very relaxed schedule and I rarely pass one up. The proprietors are frequently very interesting and a great source of local info.

Have any of you good folks ever found an old out of print book you wanted? If so, how, and where? I have a half dozen Patrick McManus books for sale if anyone's interested. I purchased them for my son so he could enjoy them and now it's time to send them on to the next lucky kid..
