Straight stock,no checkering.24" barrel, 272xxx, does the front sight hold the clue to what model this is. Brass blade held in place by a screw.

No more than your 99 was made in the 1920s. Post a picture of the rest of the rifle and you’ll get a pile of good advice.

Either a 99 B (rifle butt plate) or a 99 F (shot gun butt plate).

Rules out a 99B and 99D because those have dovetail front sights, but leaves in play a 99F or 99G. If it's uncheckered and straight stock, that would make it a 99F.

Yep, Calhoun is right, I should have consulted the book in stead of going off memory.

Octagon barreled would be an 1899B, which ran from 1899 to 1917 when it was discontinued.

The 1899A became the 99A and 99B in 1921 - 99B being the takedown version.

Ah yes, I forgot that they reused the B designation.

Doug Murray's book has this stuff in it. David Royal's book as well.

The pinned front sight and lightweight barrel (it looks thinner than the later medium weight barrel) are the characteristics of the 99F made from 1921 to 1926. The serial # is too late for it to be an 1899H.

David, are you using pinned generically? The OPs has a screw.

Like I said, a pile of advice. I think it's a 20s-era 99F. I have a 1929 99F in 303 and I'm pretty certain the front face of the receiver is stamped with an F. You should see it if you take the forearm off.

...and the serial puts production early 1925. Scope added later.

I have one that has a screw but I believe they were all pinned at the factory.

I have two 20/26 barrels (one on a rifle and the other a pare) and both have screws.

I have to quit relying on my memory. On page 44 of my book, the section covering the introduction of the 1899H I say, "the sight blade was held to the base with a small screw." I believe that mistake will probably get me 40 lashes.

No lashes, lol. I think many of us think/thought that both pinned and screwed were used. See my post I started today on this.
