I am going to be picking up a budget varmint rifle in the Rem 783 Varmint in 22-250. Looking to scope this and wondering what everyones recommendations would be on a scope in the 6-18 to 6-24 power range and keeping the cost around $300-$350?

I'd try to find a used Bushnell 4200 elite 4-16x40 or 6-24x40. These are quality scopes that are well above the quality of an entry level new scope in that price range and they should be in the $300-$400 range.

Side focus would be preferred with capped turrets and possibly a scope in the 18-20oz range. Plex or bdc reticle is fine as well.

For the money, the value of the Super Sniper fixed power scopes is hard to beat. Plus, over the Independence Day holiday, SWFA has their demo units on sale with free accessories and free shipping. One of the SS 12x models, like this one for $250 should work great as a varmint scope: SS12X42MOA, MOA-Quad, 1/4 MOA Clicks, 15 MOA Rev, Rear Focus.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have a 5-15 3200 on a 223 of mine and like it so the 4200 might be a good option. A fixed power really wouldn't work for me but I appreciate the input.

Hard to beat the Bushnell 4200 series in that price range and even competing against much more expensive glass IMO.

At the risk of being set up on by the Leupold bashers I would suggest that you look for a used Leupold VX-2 6-18x40mm. They do not fit your criteria of being side-focus but the optics are good, they are light weight. They have worked well for me on my varminters, with a little searching they can be found at for the upper end of your price specified.

Thanks Drover. I am also thinking about the 6-18 and would snatch one up if I can find one. I am a Leupy fan and still have a bunch of them. Never had an issue in 25+ years of using them as I only use them as a set and forget scope.

The poor bastids that find them out in the woods, better hope they can track better than that leupold does... If not, he'll rot out in the woods because he can't find his way back home...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Bushnell 3200 10x40. Spend the different on ammo or components and powder.

Jesus, we're talking cheap budget scope that still will give Good Service...
and I can't believe no one has mentioned the Word TASCO....
When I hear something about Budget Scope.. I think TASCO or SIMMONS....
either fitting on a Rem 783......

The OP specified the price range of his budget. It is clearly displayed in the opening post. It seems your reading comprehension was lacking there.

I’m with Seafire. I used a 6-24 Tasco on my 220 for years. Wasn’t great in real dim light, but worked fine otherwise. I finally replaced it due to needing more low light performance for hog hunting. That said, I’d probably lean toward a Burris FFII in 6.5-20 for performance at reasonable cost.

A few years ago I put a wtb post here in the classifieds for a used weaver v series. Ended up with several offers and took one of them. No side focus though. There is a 6x24 model. I think over $400 new but should be some good used ones around.

I would buy a used Leupold before a new Simmons or a new Tasco.
I like to do my hunting BEFORE I pull the trigger! There is only one kind of dead, but there are many different kinds of wounded.

Check out the Falcon M18+. For the $ it's hard to beat the features and quality. Witnessed one dial to 1000 yds on a 6.5 Creed yesterday........and back and forth to all ranges in between after that. Very repeatable on the dials.
