Any significance to the non-checkered forend?
That is a very nice fit. My money would be on a factory installed replacement w/checkering.

The butt plate is "SVG" which is after 1927. Plate and butt stock might be a replacement. Is the checkering what is on the pre-WWII 99-F? Too tired to go look.

That does look like a checkered F stock...

Heh, didn’t even see the SVG.

The 2 digits on the buttplate is similar to factory work we’ve seen before. Usually the full serial number is there. Same numbers on end of buttstock?

For JeffG, the front of the receiver has a Z stamped on it. There is a C stamped on the barrel. Thr numbers46 are also on the butt of the stock. Color of buttstock and for end pretty much perfect match and buttstock very close Fit. Having old firearms sets off these kinds of inquiries I spend a lot of time on the Smith And Wesson forum and the amount of knowledge out there and willingness to share it is great. I really appreciate your sharing. I love discourse with” real gun nuts” I have done about 30 gun transactions in the last 14 years with interesting and fine people—any of which I would be happy to sit at the dinner table with.

So I think the consensus is that you have a model 1899A SR in the very uncommon 25-35, made in early 1911, with takedown feature. It was likely sent to the factory sometime between late 1937 to 1941 for repair work, which is when that buttstock with that buttplate and checkering was being produced. The two digit number on buttplate/buttstock greatly enhances the chance of it being factory work, because a stock swap would have a full serial number of the original gun on it.

There is no standard “value” on a gun like this. An all original 1899A SR takedown in 25-35 is a very uncommon rifle and would bring a nice price. But what the factory repair work does to the price is a darned good question. For some it might make almost no difference, others might pass on it totally.

Thanks for bringing it in. It’s a cool gun.

The letter on the front of the receiver is just an inspection stamp. In the 20’s thru the 40’s that stamp was the model letter, but your gun is too early for that.

The C on the barrel is interesting.. is that on the bottom? It likely doesn’t mean anything beyond another inspection stamp, or at least we don’t know the meaning yet. More data helps us figure things out.

My 1899-A SR 25-35 take-down serial no 83240 just has a curved butt plate with the savage logo, has no checkering on the stock
Has the same fore and rear sight as the one pictured above
1908-1909 manufacture date I would guess

After seeing another post that said fore stock is numbered, I looked and it is the same number as the gun. Would a letter include repairs or replacement that were done by the factory. I know that S&W letters will reflect any return work done ? Thanks, Tom

I had a letter that said there was a work order done, buy it did not say what was done. If you request a letter, I'd ask them to also look for a work order.

I had a 1907 vintage 1899 with a later barrel. I told JTC about the later barrel and he looked through the ledgers until he found where it had been returned to the factory about 10 years later. I think the entry was "unspecified work".

The Work Order logs have been lost. The serial log will sometimes note a WO # but there is no way to know what was done on the WO. But knowing that the rifle was returned for something often helps to explain its current condition.
