I'm starting to look into this and was curious how it generally works, e.g., day, week, season? How much weight can they generally handle?

Forget alpacas. They're way too small and have light bones. They're only good for about 20 lb. They're used for short day hikes with the kids.

I've never dealt with this place but I've seen their ads online. They rent by however long you want to go. UTAH LLAMA RENTALS They can tell you what you need to know about rentals.

When my llamas are in good shape, they can handle about 80lb. A saddle, empty panniers, etc add up to about 10lb so figure 70lb. 3 can handle a cow elk, 4 for a bull.

Just spent 2 weeks on an expedition in the Andes. I never saw Llamas/Alpacas being used by other teams up there for carrying heavy loads one time in the last 3 years. Locals use them and they can carry more than 20lbs, but nothing like a horse can. If you see westerners with Llamas in the Andes they will most likely be used for camp meat and distributed to other camping parties just like Cuy are carried for fresh meat.
