Corn knee high by the 4th of July is an old saw that is really not relevant anymore, but my people and farmers around here still like to make the comparison. My Uncle Hollis sent this pic of one his corn fields yesterday. Higher than my fields.

Field corn. Cool and wet spring got planting off to a slow start, given one to question if corn would be knee high, but with several days of high temperature and humidity some fields made it or exceeded. You can almost hear it grow.

I'll try and get a pic, but the corn on my place has tasseled out and is making an ear. We on track here to have one of the best corn crops ever.

Down here in Texas the corn harvest is about to begin.I took a trip this time of the year once and went as far north as Minnesota. It was quite interesting. It was like going back in time. The corn harvest had started in South Texas and by the time I got into Minnesota, the corn was just that, about "knee high".You could really tell where the cold weather is by the size of the corn. They plant corn down here usually starting around the 20th of February. There was a thread a few weeks back about crop height. Not really having anything to due with ag lately, I often don't pay attention, or drive by a lot of fields for weeks.
Took a drive this week, and looked. I saw corn that varied from shoulder or higher to quite a bit that wouldnt come to my boot tops. Field corn all.
Sweet corn from chest to boot tops.
As the OP stated, knee hi by 4th of July, hasn't applied for years. This year, I'm worried that if we get any dry times at all, A lot of it won't be worth a dang. Even so, times getting short.

Corn down here is yellowing ahead of the harvest. It's just about there.

This is the corn on my place. One more good rain will probably make it.

Roundoak , that corn is better than anything around Washington co. It was so late this spring that a lot didn't get planted and farmers were haying before the corn was in this year. Now they are planting in the fields that didn't get planted and suppose it's winter wheat.
