How important is proper torque? My Warne rings say 25 inchpounds but I don’t feel like spending $50 on a torque driver for one job

Are you familiar with any Campfire members in your area? I’d be happy to loan you mine if you were close.

Hm. I always figured the proper torque is not so much as to crush a scope tube or strip a thread and not so low that things come loose. A genuine torque screwdriver would be better but I go with finger tight and just a little more until things tighten up and I feel the threads "stretch" and take on a preload. And better a little on the low torque side, you can always try again.

Leupold website had instructions on their PRW2 rings to torque to 28 inch pounds. I wish they would all get together and come up with the same standards

Regardless of the brand I always torque 15-17" Ibs. Some people get confused with the ring to base torque, particularly on ringmounts that attach to a grooved receiver or rail.

I use powdered rosin on the rings and torque to 15 inch lbs. Seems to work well.

I use a little blue LocTite on the threads to ensure that they don't come loose.

I recently realized I'd be most interested in the scope manufactures recommendation,if available,on torque specs.

It seems Mule Deer has said 17inch lbs in the past.

I tighten them up too tight so when I want to swap scopes I jack up screws and have to take to my gunsmith to get them off. He loves me!

Go to the Optics Forum and read the sticky on scope mounting by Formidolosus. Read it again and follow the instructions carefully and you will be happy.

I always tighten to the manufacturer recommendation. I recall reading on one of the manufacturers website that they recommend using the supplied torx tool and tighten until it starts to bend a little. They found that got pretty close to spec without over doing it. I've seen it done similarly to that except hold it snug and give the top of the torx tool a little tap with a gunsmiths hammer. It tightens it just a tad more. A few years ago I had to pay $400 for a Swarovski repair on a crushed tube that my dad mounted farmer tight. Don't over do it. 15-25 in/lbs isn't allot

If you are not lapping the scope rings first, you are in trouble, because you are introducing stress to the scope.

How important is proper torque? My Warne rings say 25 inchpounds but I don’t feel like spending $50 on a torque driver for one job Buy more rifles. That will decrease your investment proportionately and you will be happier.
