A while back I posted that my buddy gave me a few hundred Remington 100 gr CL's. Some one asked if they were the old pointed ones or the newer blunt ones. That the old pointed ones actually shot better. The ones I got then look just like the blunt ones you get in loaded Remington 250-3000 now. Saturday I was over his house and he handed me a jug of 500 Rem 100gr PSP's. Are these the ones that I should be looking for? I was in a hurry to get to Gary's before all the beer was gone, so I didn't sit them side by side to see if the PSP's were longer. No need to tell me to just switch to the 87's, I have hundreds of them too. I have two rifles dedicated to 100 gr.bullets. Gary was casting up some 85 gr'ish lead bullets for the other 2, 250's that are dedicated, NON 100 gr. guns.

If the 100gr PSP's aren't proven in the 1:14 250's, I'll just load them up in the 25-35, it shoots minute of pebble at 50 yards with 110's.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

FWIW, a couple years ago I pulled together .257 bullet lengths in a spreadsheet. Triple-deuce (Joe) pulled one of his factory Rem Core-lokt 100grs apart and measured it for me; 0.928". This turned out to the shortest 100gr .257 bullet I was able to find data on. (The 87gr Speer Hot-Cor is 0.820" long).

The next two shortest 100gr were the Speer HP (0.960") and the Sierra #1620 Pro Hunter (0.970").

Give them to me, Joe, and I'll melt the lead out of them for you. You're welcome.

John just stuck the Mike on the 100gr PAP and they came out at .970, too long.

If you have a boatload of them to shoot up they might be a candidate for a bullet trim die. More than one way to skin a biscuit.

Or, like you said, Joe, save them for use in the .25-35.

Yep, 25-35 fodder, we still have several hundred of the short 100gr CL's. Maybe I'll break down and load up some 87's?

I've got a pile of different .257 bullets going in the yard sale this weekend. Lots of discontinued bullets.

Can a worms. Everything's in boxes until Thursday or maybe even Friday. Is there something specific you want David? I've got some odd stuff like 300 Herters 100 grain psp, some Speer 60 grain SP, things like that. Some partial boxes, some multiple boxes. A few different bullets that would work in 250, like Remington 87 grain.

I tend to use the shotgun approach to ammo collecting. If I like it I buy it. One thing I would like is some short 100 grain round nose bullets to test in my 1 in 14" twist barrels. I've been getting good accuracy with round nose 150 gr. bullets in my 303's and 30-30's. They have more bullet in contact with the rifling than the pointed bullets which I suspect gives better accuracy. I want to try some round nose in the 250's and see if that helps.

OK David, no round nose. Closest I have to that is 300 Speer 75 grain soft point flat nose for 25-35 and 100 Remington 86 gr flat nose for the 25-20.

I had ordered box of the Remington .257 100gr PSP from Midway when they got them in stock a week ago. They arrived today. About 80% are between 0.950"-0.955". About 10% 0.942"-0.949" and 10% 0.956"-0.958".

This is still the shortest 100gr .257 I have data on. It would be easy to file a few thousands off the extruding lead tip. I'll try 5 of them that are 0.950" and see if they work in my EG.

In my testing, anything over 1" wouldn't stablize at all in older 250-3000's. 7"+ groups...

At .91", bullets stablized pretty good - good enough to hunt with, imho. But still not as good as the .835" 87gr Speer Hot Core.

My thoughts at the time was that 0.94"-0.96" length bullets is probably the safe cutoff point where it starts shooting well enough to take into the field, but under 0.90" is where you'll start getting really nice groups. So I'll be interested to see how these do. I'm betting they do "good enough".

I probably won't waste them on the 250. I have plenty of 100gr Corelokts that shoot well. I'll try these PSP's in the 25-35.

I have 3 boxes of 87 Speers here on the shelf, and random samplings mic .837" in length.
