Which statement is truest:

A. Marlin made Savage rifle
B. Savage made Savage rifle
C. Colt made Savage rifle
D. All of the above
E. A. and B. only

I am referring to Savage rifles made before anyone on this forum was born.

Did Colt make prototypes for the 1892 &1893 designs?

I misplaced my Murray's and can't confirm my hunch, AAHHHHH!!!

The answer is D ....... We all know about Marlin ..... I hope we all know about Savage ....

Colt made the 1888 repeating Martini that was Arthur Savage's first attempt at firearm design ..... accounts state that it showed " very high quality workmanship and design " ......

No need to distress over the misplaced Murray's Olgrouser - it wouldn't help. In his discussion of the 1892 and 1893 patent design rifles, there is no mention of Colt playing a hand.

I know Stever will bust if he signs on at lunch time and there's no answer. Les and Jed are correct, although Les is clearly guided by his saavy for multiple choice tests that can often be figured out even if you have no idea of what the answer is. So, yes, Colt did make at least one rifle for Savage - prior to 1904. I see that gd'40 has info. that I was not aware of. That is probably the thing I love the most about this forum - finding information I did not know. You can old read your Murrya's so many times and you start to crave more. Here, you just never know what jewel of knowledge will pop up in a thread.

What I am not certain of is whether Colt made more than one rifle for Savage. It is possible the repeating Martini rifle gded is referring to is a different rifle I am referring to. Then again, maybe someone here has more information. But regarding the specific Colt made Savage rifle I have referenced,

Let's extend the quiz:

Savage paid Colt how much to build the rifle for them:

A. $100
B. $200
C. $500
D. $1,000
E. $2,000
F. $5,000
G. $10,000

Glen got it correct too.
I'll take G for 10,000. Steve.

I am going to guess for now and say $100 ( which was alot of money in 1887 ..... ) I will double check when I get home .

I've got to disagree with you on that point Lauren. I am nearly aquiver over the "documentation" that Glen mentions he has at home. Also, this all does pertain to what ultimately became the M1895, then M1899 and finally M99. If Glen's documentation mentions anything about the cost of the rifle, we will know if they are the same gun. It would be very interesting to me to know if Colt made more than one gun for Savage. I respect it may be of no interest to you. There has been the ongoing disagreements here between those that want to just talk '99s and those that want to talk M1903 .22's, Savage shotguns, Stevens buckhorn rifles and so on. grin wink

Interesting.
I got to look at a Couple More Books
Perhaps Glen Will Kind Enough to Fax Me A Copy.
Cost for Savege to Colt I Would Say 100 to 200.00 Dollars
After All 100.00 Back then Is Like 10,000 today or More.
Learn Something Ever Day.
Tnx Steve For Sharing. Love to Learn Something New.
Is It Miller Time Yet???
