I am lightening up my mountain rifle a little and replacing the currently mounted Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56mm MC (30 mm tube) scope with a Swaro Z5 3-18-44 (1" tube). My question is- what would be the best rings/bases to buy or are more people going to the picatinny rail system? FWIW, this is a Christensen Carbon 1 Custom, Model 70 Winchester action, 300 win mag. Thanks for the input in advance.

If you are looking to lighten it up, Talley Lightweights and the new Leupold one piece rings are the only truly light rings. Rail and rings will add weight. How much weight you want to add back is up to you.

DNZ Huntmaster's. Simlar in design to Talley LW's, but better made IMO.

Yes multiple sets. One set was so bad I sent it back to them and they said it must be the scope that is not sized right. It was sized right compared to my other 30mm scopes.

Seems like stuff I bought the last 2 years required a lot of lapping to fit even though they were on I thought quality rifles. The last one mounted on a Remington 700 was awful.

I have Talley signature bases and Screw Lock rings on all but a couple rifles. They are really great, it’d be tough to change to anything else!
And the folks at Talley are top notch.

I replaced the DNZ rings in question with Talley lightweights and they fit perfectly. Talleys do not check all the boxes for me but they were better machined then the DNZ's. DNZ make a nice paperweight

DNZ make a nice paperweight Talleys are pretty terrible in my expiereance as far as the need for lapping goes. If you dont lap them they really mark up scopes. They also are pretty flimsy. So far all the Huntmasters I have used have been perfect. YMMV I guess.

I sent it to them and they returned it and said my Zeiss scope was the issue. I turned around and ordered Talley rings and voila they fit the scope and rifle perfectly with just a smidge and I mean very little lapping.

Yeah that particular scope has a very generous mounting tube length

With a light weight 300 mag. and still a relatively heavy scope (16 oz.), I'd really look for strength over saving another ounce or two. You won't notice an extra ounce like you would a scope mount failure.
Talley steel rings and bases would be the strongest. I'd stay away from the Talley LWs on that setup.
Or, if you really want the rail and a somewhat lighter setup, the Warne Mountain Tech line are solid.

Steel Talley’s aren’t that heavy.
Will work well.

You want light and strong, that is easy, original Weaver rings and bases
