I was in Walmart shopping with my wife a couple hours ago (after yesterday I was afraid to let her go without an armed escort) and I wondered back to the gun counter. They had a Savage Axis in 6.5 Creedmoor for $294. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with the Axis. How's the accuracy etc? Sounds pretty cheap for an accurate rifle. I have a Savage 10FP in .223 that will shoot five shots that can be covered by a dime at 100 yards with Black Hills 68 grain OTM ammo.

I bought a few last year and gifted them to kids.

The three I bought shoot as well as my Tikka and my Fieldcraft.

Based on a lot of reading, the Axis is right there with the Ruger American in the accuracy for the dollar category.

My son picked up a stainless synthetic last year. He put a VX-3i 3.5-10 and it is extremely accurate. So much so that I started to look for one. This past January, our Wal-Mart had them on sale for $250 and there was a $50 rebate. Only problem is they were in 308 only. I picked one up figuring I wasn't out a lot if it didn't shoot well I put a Burris 3-9x40 and had a box of 150 grain Core-Lokts so I tried them. I shot a 10 shot group at 100 that was one ragged hole. Second 10 shot group was the same. I have been reloading and getting nearly the same accuracy with 165 Hornady Interlocks and IMR 4064. It has been a very easy rifle to shoot.

Truth is, they are what they are, I've had a lot of fun with mine and cheap accuracy is pretty good I think. In total I have less than $500 in the entire outfit and have had no issues at all. I have shot in the neighborhood of 500 rounds since May and it feeds very well (unlike my buddies Americans).

I have an Axis in 6.5 Creedmoor. It is accurate, but I hate the stock ergs.

I also have a Mossberg Patriot in 6.5 Creedmoor. It is accurate and I like the stock ergs.

It depends on your point of of view. If you look at guns as tools and don't worry about refinements in looks, ergos, etc, then there are plenty of economical paths to getting a good shooter. Even the Yurrupeans are getting on board this trend, not just for the U.S. market, but for gamekeepers and others that want good shooters that won't break the bank. One effect here, I think, is the softening up of the market for good used rifles- many would rather have a new economy model than a used one that might be a notch or two above on the quality scale; a reaonable choice.

I'm not buying stuff like this, but I see why others do, and don't badmouth them for it. I do, if asked, recommend against sinking a bunch of money in one for upgrades designed to make them something they'll never be-, "nice" rifles, as opposed to simply good ones.

I believe there are three Axis rifles. The original one an Axis, the second was an update to the original and therefore, is an Axis II. This year's edition is again called an Axis and is the newest rendition of the Axis/ Axis II. I think the original Axis was based on the now discontinue d Edge.

A friend of mine has a stainless 6.5 Axis and it is very accurate he shot probably a dozen whitetail last season out to 350 yards it hammered them.

If it is an Axis II with Accutrigger and the newer, less-flexy stock, you are good to go. Be advised that all Axis rifles are long action. That irritates some, but the rifle is so light it doesn't cause much of a problem. The early Axis had a heavy trigger that was in the 5-7 pound range (usually), but I have seen a couple with 8-9 pound triggers

Got my daughter one in 243, I’m pleased with it. I like RAR’s better, but couldn’t pass on the price. And pink camo.

At that price, I found the T/C Compass to be the better buy.

Grandkids have them, all shoot great! I have a cheap ass Hog hunter in 308. It is extremely accurate too.

Bought a TC Compass last weekend. Haven't had a chance to shot it yet. New with a 4-12x44 Vortex scope for $349.99.
