so I went out today to work on setting up my base camp for opening day of general deer season next weekend. I came across this skeleton while I was hiking in. it kinda looks like some sort of fish but Figueroua mountain doesn't have a lake. the nearest lake would be either zaca or cachuma which is a decent distance from where I am hunting. any ideas on what type of critter this is??

But of course. Actually looks kind of like a snake to me.

I don't know what it is. Head looks like it could be a turtle. As far as it getting to where you found it if it is an aquatic is easy to explain. Bird of Prey carried it there.

Wow, a redeeming feature of Komifornia. Not a fan of hot weather hunting, but more hunting time isn't a bad thing.

Skull sure looks turtle, but the rest sure does say fish. Gravel is up on it like there was some erosion. How far to lake, stream or pond. Do bowfins or snakeheads have skull bones like that?
Where was this in kalifornia?

The skull looks like that of a turtle but turtles don’t have a spinal column like the one in the photo.Their spine is basically along the inside of the shell.

Did it taste fishy? I think that is what a California liberal would look like when they shed their skin. Damn thing is nasty looking and I'm glad we don't have them in Alaska.

Does look like a tortoise head. Spine looks like a snake.

Blowing it up and looking at the spine, it still says fish to me and the spine ends with rays of bone like a fish tail. Click on the picture to blow it up, the look it over with a magnifying glass.
