Does anyone happen to know how thick the recoil lug is on a rem 700 action? I don't have one handy or I would mike it myself and the person at Remington customer service was no help.

They tend to vary a little but .1870 is pretty much the standard.

Mine measured at .190, it came off of a magnum sporter factory barrel (.257 Weatherby mag).

Ok close enough. .190 to .187 is only .003 . The project involves a rem. take off barrel and a new long action, to keep from having to mess with the chamber I need to grind or mill the after mkt. lug to rem. size , new lug mikes .250

You can buy a .187 from PTG also. Or I’m sure a few guys here might have a factory lug laying around. Most likely the headspace will be within spec but the barrel stamping won’t be lined up.

I'd use the .250 recoil lug and take the extra off the shoulder of the barrel. Or have someone with a lathe take it off. I'd alot rather have the .250 recoil lug.

C'mon now Butch. You must not be holding your mouth right. We all know that those flimsy Remington lugs bend so easy even a caveman could do it.

I made my own lug once. I started with flat ground steel. Bored the hole with drill and then a boring bar. Put it on a mandrel in a chuck on a horizontal rotary table on the mill, and milled the outline. When I went to debur it, I put it on fine grit black sandpaper on a flat surface. But my fingers pushed down as hard on the narrow top part as the wide lower part. The added pressure per area made the top thinner. The part was as out of flat as the Remington take off part. I bought an aftermarket lug. I looked at surface grinders. Jack Belk used them for gunsmithing. But they are way too expensive and heavy when I see how cheap PTG will sell me a recoil lug. I never made another recoil lug.

Eddie, you've been around the block at least 2 times. ClarkM, you found out as I did. I do have a surface grinder and skim my factory lugs. If I had a fat lug I would skim it on the surface grinder and use it. I sure wouldn't spend money on one though.

I have not seen a Remington lug bend. I have seen a bunch of bent Savage lugs. As Redneck pointed out, Model 70 lugs never bend! GD
