An LGS near me has had a Ruger MK II SS 270 for a while and is in good , but not spiffy, shape, and I do not know why or why not a Hawkeye SS in the same caliber would be the better choice. The Mk II is priced at $450 and I'm not seeing used comparable Hawkeye's anywhere near that price. So what features makes the Hawkeye the better choice to buy is my ??.

The Hawkeye is not a better choice. It may have a slightly better trigger, but you can fix either with an Ernie trigger spring.
The MKII will have a shiny stainless finish that is more resistant to corrosion and dings but is also more reflective.
Just buy the MK II and you'll have a good one.

I prefer the Hawkeyes for the steel floorplate. Not a huge deal either way. The two All Weather Hawkeyes I've owned both came with perfectly usable triggers, better than how I remember my Mk II. Either can be tweaked or replaced.
The matte finish is pretty subdued, so I prefer that as well over the shiny Mk II. A little Frog Lube or Break Free will keep either free from rust. I also much prefer the current synthetic stocks to the cult favorite boat paddle.
All that said, $450 for a nice SS Mk II is a deal IMO. Last new All Weather Hawkeyes I priced were about $700. Don't know about used prices.

Thanks guys ...good insights on my post that was supposed to go into the Gunwriter section...and Yes i'm a littled concerned that the $450 price could be a little too good to be the Total Price. .

$450 is a good price for either. I like the SS on the m77 and the stock on the Hawkeyes. There's no huge changes between the 2. There's lighter, there's more accurate, there's prettier but I don't know if there's a more reliable current production rifle in that price range.

A few of the Wal-Marts here in AK have the Ruger Hawkeye SS on closeout in various calibers for $549. The closest one to me only has a .270 WIn, or I may have snuck one home by now.

Personally I prefer the Mk II over the Hawkeye. And that's exactly what it boils down to. Personal Opinion. The $450 is a good price, jump on it, or someone may beat you. There are no steals out there anymore. Market is soft and people are just trying to turn inventory.

You win either way. I like them both. There is a bit more cult-factor to the MKII's. Have seen the MKII's at up to $750, so this one sounds like a deal.

This'un is still on the wall, but with a little price increase to $475 when I called at lunch. Manana we'll find out if he wants to deal on it or not....or how many dents & dings it's got that are too many for me that my month+ ago, 30 second once over did not show up.

I always preferred the Mk II stainless finish, never had a bad one. I’ve had a couple of the Hawkeyes in stainless and hated the finish, if that was what you called it. Triggers on both will need work. Either one will probably shoot fine. I’ve never either one in blued.
