PS, but make sure you do it in Elk season, as before that they only come to huckleberry imitations. Can YOU imitate a huckleberry?

If you kill an elk and for whatever reason leave it on the ground, ie retrieving horses, summoning friends, etc., and a bear claims it, you will be cited for wasting game here in Montana. Rank stupidity. Yeah. That's really dumb. It's not like you can shoot the bear to claim your elk back.

Ravens are probably smarter than bears.
Tell that to Mike Ditka and see how it turns out. 😁 Ha ha!

Do the bears know when it is elk season? hmmmmmm Trucks show up, pack strings show up, canvas tents sprout where there weren't any last week, a whole lot more elk noises in the trees and parks, the smell of coffee brewing.................not so much of that stuff going on during huckleberry season. If you lived out there with Ol' Griz, would you know when elk season started. I live on the route to the Black Rock desert. Easy enough for me to tell when Burning Man season is starting. Geno PS, next week, I've already seen the advance parties showing up in town. Big ads for the local Indian Gas station in the local paper too.,

So Geno can you smell the burning man hippies before you see them? They're no different than the unwashed masses anywhere. Get in the same aisle in the grocery with any of them, hippies, po' white trash, curry eaters, surf bums, and you'll wish you didn't need to get cereal that day. Geno PS, elk hunters after a week + in the woods with no showers are no better when they finally get to town for some fresh grub.

Bearanoia abounds....
Studies have shown Yellowstone bears leave the park when hunting season arrives. They do indeed understand seasonal food sources, and where they are found. If Ravens can figure out following a hunter can lead to food, so can bears
Can someone illustrate how a Raven or a bear knows that the guy walking through the woods is a hunter and not just a hiker. They just aren't that discerning. They can no doubt find a gutpile, but to say they follow hunters specifically because they are hunting is ridiculous...

The manner they move, the gear hunters carry. It's not hard.

It is not uncommon for bears to come to the sound of a gun shot on Kodiak and Afognak islands during deer season.
.
I put quite a bit of game down when I was in Kodiak and never experienced that. Nor did anyone else I know.

I know a lot of people that have brownies take deer. If it’s across a steep canyon the bear may well beat you to it, grab it, and run uphill with it.
At my friends cabin there got to run the generator over night to keep the outside lights on and power the electric fence around the hanging meat.
