I’m looking at a scope for my savage 99 243, trying to decide between a vortex viper 3x9x40 or a Leupold american rifleman 3x9x40. Anyone have any opinions or have any experience with these two scopes?

Really.... so what didn’t you like about the Leupold that made you pick the viper?

If it's between the two you mentioned, I' take the Vortex Viper. I just compared my Vortex Viper and Leupold VX3i side by side last Monday at the range, and the Vortex zoomed better for only a 3-9 compared to 3.5-10, and was a little clearer class in my eyes. I am not a Vortex by any means, but the Viper lines on up have proven to be pretty good scopes for most people.

Stays zeroed and easy precise adjustments! Much more reliable. And I have had a lot more 3 x 9 Leupolds than Vipers.

Got rid of all of my 2 X 7 Leupolds had a bunch, and have had better luck with the Redfield Revolution 2 X 7 and Vortex Viper
2 X 7 which was discontinued.

Like certain models of all scopes, but every company makes certain ones better than others.

Can I ask why you just chose those 2 models to compare? I have owned both and would honestly rather have a Burris FF2. I think a lot of guys would agree that they are really reliable scopes and can take a beating.

If you're stuck on those 2, get the Viper. I don't think the 3-9x40 Viper has been made in awhile though. I would go with the Burris suggestion if it were my money

There’s a store selling off their 3x9 vipers at 329$. I’m just looking for a smaller lighter scope under the $450 price range because living in Canada sucks. We get screwed with the way the dollar is. And it’s near impossible to find any higher end Burris scopes around here.

I think Vortex Viper scopes are pretty good but the closest comparison to Leupold would probably be more like a VX-3i as opposed to a Rifleman. And it would depend on what model of the Viper you are looking at. The 3-9 x 40 is an older discontinued model. The newer models are more expensive.

Yes 329 Canadian, and bowmanh the vx3i are running 600 plus dollars here, it’s most likely the discontinued model. This is only for a savage 99, so I’m not looking for anything magnificent

They've got a great little scope there if they'd just bump the glass up a bit....

The Burris Fullfield 2 is not a high end scope and can be found for around $150 down here in the states. They are compact and very lightweight as well.

I seem to hear this a lot with Vortex. This is why I recommend the Burris as it seems to be a no frills and no bs option.
