Son Jake, and a friend just arrived in Wabigoon a short time ago. I think friend Jeremey is fairly new to using an outhouse. He's a good fellow, and a good sport, he should survive.

Many of you folks may have the primitive facilities, want to share thoughts?

They kinda remind me of inane threads..
They smell like crap and pretty much have the same substance.

Never had one ourselves, but one aunt and uncle had theirs as the only facility, two other pairs had plumbing, but maintained the biffy for "outside" use. When we were at the "only" after dark, I took many a piss just around the corner of the house. At one fly-in we had a huge lightning strike just outside the cabin. We were pretty sure that the tshidder had been blown away, but it was still standing in the morning.

We have primitive facilities at our deer camp in Pa. There's a really good deer crossing right above the camp that can be seen from the schitter. I keep waiting for someone to shoot one while assuming the position out there.

Uncles and dad built grandad a new one circa 1977. Two seater. They had 9 kids and 35+/- grandkids so made sense. Uncle sat down. Other uncle traced his ass. Old man made one beautiful cut with a chain saw. Grandad went in to try it out, stormed out 10 seconds later. Came marching back from his wood shop with a 24" long bastard file and proceeded to smooth it out after getting the splinters out of his ass.
Never forget when they installed a bathroom around 1980. Grandad was pissed! Said "even my cows knows not to [bleep] where they sleep!".

Mom was from B.F.E. WVa. Most of my family on her side had outhouses up through the late 80's. GEM pump was standard for bringing water in to the house.

I don't know if you remember the television show "Picket Fences" or not, but it originally had a whole different plot and a different title. It was supposed to be about an outhouse with a cracked seat and was to be called "PHUQUE, It Pinches!"

A couple of years after we bought our place in north Idaho we arrived from our home in Calgary with the three of the five of us needing a crapper. The cabin has two. When summer came my wife insisted another avenue. The boys and I dug and built this. Now, 12 years later, it is still used by folks that sleep in the bunkhouse. A bucket of wood stove ash resides within and a small coffee can tossed on a load just works.

A foam seat is the cat's whiskers in cold weather.
