I bought a Winchester 88 and a Sako Forester in the spring of '61. Both in .308W. I believe the 88 was more distinctive looking although it is what I traded in on the Sako. I also believe both were available during the previous year. I'll go with the "88".
2D
And, I should have just let this part lie, but, the first U.S. military advisors were sent to Vietnam in 1950. by 1960 there were around 12,000 of them there.
No flame intended. Just a history refresher.

Well folks we have a winner in fact several winners, but first I must acknowlege an error on my part about the advisors in Vietnam I believe we started that program in the early 50's not 60's sorry about that.
We had a winner early on but this was too good to let go so I waited until now to announce the winner, although he should be disqualified for a wrong guess on his first attempt it would be a grave injustice if I were not to present him as the winner. "Big Stick" please stand up and take a bow the answer is the Winchester 100.
And yes the 308 with a carefully placed shot will indeed take a brown bear. I for one however, would not want to try and kill one that is in a foul mood or charging in my direction with out some major fire power. Thanks guys this was fun. Some one elses turn now.
Bullwnkl.

Winkl,
You spilled the beans, when you commented to AFP,that he was CLOSE. The Win 100,is about the only offering of the time, with such distinct lines, then offered in 308(excepting the previously mentioned models,at that point of the thread).
Your hint was good enough,I mentioned it twice(grin). As "winner",may I request the posting of the photo? That would be great!.........

I figguerd the answer would be obvious to many as soon as I posted rply to AFP. Funny how many answers I got. I replyed to most all of them except you because you got it rite early on. Seems no one picked up on that. Also I do not think the Savage 99 was offered in 308 in or before 1960, I could be wrong but don't think so. As the winner you are entitled to have a nice day any time you wish.
Bullwnkl.

Winkl,
I'm very interested to see the photo. Thanks for being so generous,as to share it. Few things better, than a little Hunting nostalgia............
