I'm interested in what factory ammo the 300 wsm owners would recommend......what seems to group well for you....the only bullet I've put through my M70 is federal fusion 180 gr, so I'm not even sure how accurate this gun is if it's only used fusion....I'm currently hovering between 7/8"-1.5" 3 shot groups at the bench when I get consistent recoil control. Any benchrest advice for these thumpers would be appreciated as well. I seem to have my best results just free resting the front end on a caldwell jr.rock and using a rear bag.

My Browning loves the Barnes VOR-TX. Not cheap, but good.

Mine really likes federal TLR. Haven't tried anything else, but it shoots around .5-.75".

I have tried 4 or 5 factory loads in my EW .300 WSM. All shot around 1.5-2.0 inches at hundred yards for 3 shots.

Federal Fusion 180's, Winchester 180 Power Points, Federal Premium 180 gr trophy bonded tipped, Hornady Whitetail 165 gr., and one other that I can't think of off the top of my head.

My handloads are loaded to max overall cartridge length and and with 180's (nosler ballistic tips or accubonds) and 150 accubonds, shoot sub moa, most around .75 moa for 3 shots.

I tried an experiment with the Trophy Bonded Tipped bullets since I bought 5 boxes of them and slightly pulled the bullets and re-seated them at 2.86 inches OAL, same as my handloads. They went to .75 inch for 3 shots at 100 and maintain that out to 400 yards which is as far as i've tested them.

I tried that with the Hornady Whitetail ammo and it only improved to 1-1.25 inches at a hundred. But good enough for deer to 500, although my longest shot to date has only been just over 300, and that was with a .308 win. The deer i've killed with the .300 have all been inside of 200 yards. So even the ammo shooting 2 moa would be fine for that.

Off the bench when testing I use a past recoil pad on my shoulder and rest my off hand on top of the scope to keep the recoil coming straight back and that seems to mitigate the effects of the recoil. But for sure I don't have extended range sessions with the WSM. In an 8lb package it gets a little snorty after a while which takes the fun out of it. So I switch to .308's and 6.5's, but my Model 70 EW is my favorite rifle package to carry hunting.

Bob.

I have had decent luck with the 180 gr. Accubonds and 200 Gr. ELD-X. Hopefully since I have my Remington 700 BDL .300WSM fixed, I can see hw it shoots the ELD-X, but the few I put through the Tikka they did well.

Thx for the feedback. Picked up some ballistic tipped offerings in federal premium, win ballistic silver tip, and hndy outfitter for some testing, all 180 gr. Been researching tips on bench set up.....may try using a Caldwell bag on the front.....opinions vary on whether or not to hold down on the scope or just let it hop....gotta get this thing consistently moving straight back if possible.

Are these factory loads, and if so where did you get them? I had some Berger's I think for the .280 Rem. a few years back and did not get my usual accuracy from them. I'd like to try them out in a different rifle.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

So I got to the range a couple of days ago to compare the ballistic tip ammo for the following:

Winchester supreme Silver ballistic tip. 150 gr
Federal premium nosler tip. 180 gr
Hornady Outfitter. 180 gr

The federal and the hornady grouped similarly with POI in similar location to POA....roughly 2" high, 1.5" right, groups 1-1.7"

Started shooting the 150 gr WSSB...and wasn't able to hit a 9" diameter plate.....it wasnt until I set up 2 plates in a snowman configuration before I could realize the 150 gr WSSB shot 8.5" higher than the 180 gr offerings, the result was a 3shot 1.5" group.......that seems a bit strange to me.
