300 EG I picked up at a LGS , always wanted to see a ebony tipped 99 so decided to get my own. Entire stock needed refinishing, needed a grip cap and a new recoil pad. Metal was missing most of the bluing and some rust but no pitting. Used 3500 year old bog oak I had for knife scales to make the grip cap and ebony tip. Stock itself really turned out great with the special walnut stain and truoil. Installed the grind to fit recoil pad and refinished the metal with black duracoat. Decided to make a matching knife out of the same block of bog oak for the knife scales and D2 steel. https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/galleries/14101008/savage-99-and-knifeTime well spent, next project starting soon.

Looks really good to me. Would like to see a closeup of just that tip.
The large image gets there I guess.

I like the color contrast of that, and that you recreated the schnabel. Good for You!

Thanks guys, it was one of those projects that actually turned out better than expected because the stock had great character and really popped when I finished getting the truoil on. The LGS has my next project I’ll be picking up soon. A very used and abused marlin 35 Rem. No ebony tip on that one but I’m looking forward to see how’s it turns out. That one will probably stay at home with me for a few deer seasons.

shorten the forearm, remove that godawful schnabel (very few have the talent to sculpt a decent schnabel -you're not alone) and replace with a straight rounded forend cap - the rest looks good and appears to have been done well.

Thanks everyone,
Side note I keep meaning to add, I made the knife first and had leftover handle material. It’s Russian bog oak that has been stabilized in a vacuum with resin. This particular piece was carbon dated at around 3500 years old. When you put truoil or I imagine other oils, it gets really dark like ebony. Turns out it worked perfectly for savage project.
