I used a few Bushnell and Simmons budget scopes when I was younger, had a family to feed, and money was tight. I can't recall ever not being able to pick out the target due to the background which sounds more like an eyesight problem or poor scope fit. OP knows what he can afford and there are plenty of options that will serve him well. I have and can afford nicer optics nowadays but I still have a $69 4x Simmons on a rifle because it works fine. I've got 7 Simmons scopes from the early 1980's still in use after nearly 40 years. 5 are the Model 1040, 2-7x32, and 2 are the Model 1053, 1.5-4.5x32. All 7 scope have been mounted, dismounted, and swapped around between at least a dozen rifles during that time. 4 of the 1040s are still in use on a Mossberg 640, a Savage 65, and a pair of Savage 24s. The 1053s are mounted on a pair of Mossberg 479 lever action 30-30s, 1 that I leave with my Colorado cache and 1 that I leave with my New Hampshire cache. They aren't first tier scopes, but they have always worked as intended.

I could see one of these working just fine. I like the two I have, though in MilDot. There's been some great $120 or less riflescope bargains and surely it'll happen again.... FFII, VX1, Prostaff

For some reason I bought a $22 Simmons 8-point 3-9x50 off Fleabay, then, liked it so much I bought 4 more!. They're still sitting until I get more cheap rifles. Unsurprisingly they are not alpha glass. LOL

I know I know, you get what you pay for but if you only had $100 to spend on a scope for a low recoiling rifle what would you go with??? I'd buy a good name used scope.

I've bought a couple of Leupold M8 6x scopes for $100, and they both work just great!
I have one on my "loaner" 30-06 and a dad/son team both got their first elk with it last year. No dials to turn, no dots to distract, just a clear image and easy-to-see crosshairs - point and shoot.

I think natchez has some nikon refurbs for about that. Buckmaster would be my choice for a budget hunting scope.

You simply aren't going to do better than one of those Bushnell Trophy XLT'S from CDNN For 69.00. Buddy of mine has one on a .270 and has had no trouble killing a buch of deer with it. I've looked through it and it's plenty good glass for hunting if you aren't half blind.
