I've recently retired and have a company 401k plan with Fidelity. I'm wanting to move it away from any company contact and into a personal IRA. Do you have suggestions as to which bank or institution is better to deal with, better security or ease of operation etc. Thanks, retired StrayDog

Fidelity is hard to beat. Just roll it into an IRA. They will walk you through it and do the paperwork. You won’t even need to change companies. I would do the same thing we’re I you.

That's what I'll probably do, they seem to have a broad selection of funds available. I've no experience with Vanguard or other places, just testing the waters with 24hour campfire.

I use both Fidelity and Vanguard and both are outstanding and easy to use. Good luck.

Vanguard. I was in the industry and I chose them for our personal money.

Fidelity sells Vanguard funds. In fact, they sell a whole bunch of financial products.

If it was all my retirement I would consider splitting it up between a couple different companies and investment options. Fidelity is the largest, but I always worry about keeping my eggs in one basket.

You can do what i did. Three fourths in the vanguard sp500 index fund to get a wide sampling of the stock market and one fourth in the pimco total return bond fund. Diversified many times over.

I was also in the brokerage business... Fidelity or Vanguard are good for self directed. Equity Trust Corp is the best if you are going to buy timberland or farmland or any kind of land really...

I had my 401K with Fidelity and it was a simple and fast process to roll it over into an IRA. You could even keep any of your current positions, without having to convert them to cash, until you are ready.

I'll concur.... just roll them to the equivalent positions in a self directed IRA.
One pretty strong suggestion: once you do have the money in IRA's, put on your retirement "to do" lists to learn about investing. Once you have a good understanding, change / move your money around to your preference. Don't invest in anything you can't easily explain to a High School Freshman. EVER.

Vanguard. I was in the industry and I chose them for our personal money. This - I am a CPA who came to the same conclusion. That's where I have our money.

"Fidelity sells Vanguard funds. In fact, they sell a whole bunch of financial products." Fido charges $75.00 USD for Vanguard funds, OUCH!!! Both Fidelity, and Vanguard are good and it all depends on what are your needs? This is from a War Horse in the security business for 40 years.

I use both Fidelity and Vanguard and both are outstanding and easy to use. Good luck. My parents used Vanguard and we've used Fidelity and both are highly satisfactory.

I wasn't dissing Vanguard. I just thought it simpler to stay with the same company. There are several out there with good reputations.
I will say this. Unless you know nothing about investing, I'd stay away from those places like Edward Jones or Raymond James. They are much more concerned with getting your money than with growing your money.
