and I don't intend to make the effort to do so: dew point. I get the definition, but I cannot make it useful in figuring out what it means to me. I have many short-comings; this is but one of them.

Me neither. Until I started flying, then you better understand.

The difference in the dew point of the air and it’s temperature is used to determine the relative humidity.

Here's one use. Water vapor gives up a lot of heat when it condenses. So a decline in air temperature near the surface tends to stall out at the dew point while all that excess heat dissipates. Sometimes it stalls at the dew point all night.

Answer #1 How long does it take before you can see through your windshield? #2 How wet is your sleeping bag?
All other metrics may be irrelevant.

It's actually easy. If nighttime temps drop to the dewpoint, dew will be deposited on the ground (or on your tent, or your car, etc.).
Fog also starts to form when temps drop to the dewpoint.
Air absorbs water like a sponge, from any available source - lakes, rivers, vegetation, sprinklers. And warmer air can hold more water than colder air. So if warm daytime air has been able to absorb lots of water, it's a good bet that when nighttime air cools down, it won't be able to hold all of it - so it condenses out as dew or fog.

The dew point is simply the temperature point when the air releases its water content.
It’s like when you sweat. Your body reaches a temperature where it releases its water content.

Dew point in the 50s, pleasant.
Dew point in the 70s, oppressive.

I used to fly at night with the Army Guard. We could see the moisture coming down and condensing close to the ground. I guess you had to be there.

Simple. Thanks. That is the most useful response that I have seen. But still, so what?
