I have had an eye out for an old Mauser action to rebarrel to 9.3x62. It would have a fixed peep sight and not be setup for a scope. Classic pattern stock, mil style safety and loadable with stripper clips.

I think a donar I found will work. It is bluing worm but not pitted at all. It has byf 42 on the bridge. What does that code mean? Is it a likely to be a good action?

As an alternative, you could sell that barrel for good money and get a short chambered barrel from Lothar Walther and be no worse for the wear or simply rebore that one to 9.3. Keep us posted!

What does a Husqvarna 640 have to do with a military byf 42 Mauser ?

byf 42 is the code for Mauser Obendorf, 1942. Dad has one he's had since he was 14, had it rebarreled in 8mm Gibbs when I was in college. One of the better military actions.

OP had an eye out for an Mauser and I was offering an option which may require less work that's all.

Can spend a bunch on a military Mauser; not too uncommon for a commercial Mauser to be a better deal.

I have almost an identical project on a slow burn. Mine will be on an FN model 1950 military action that was already sporterized with a receiver sight instead of a scope. This will allow the use of stripper clips too. 9.3x62 looks really cool on clips!

As others have said, that action is from Mauser Werk in 1942. Should be a fine action for your project.

That being said, commercial actions are generally built to tighter specs with better materials and do not need as much modification as military. I went with my FN military because it's a post war action (better materials, no wartime corners cut) and I like the stripper clip guide and thumb cut that post war commercial actions lack.
