I have 2 pick-ups that I want to swap tires on. The tires are the same size, but I don't know the width of one of the wheels. Is there a way to determine the width of the wheel?

Lay it flat on the floor with a board across the top. Measure the distance from the board to the floor. Subtract the distance from the board to the rim. Flip it over and subtract the distance from the board to the rim again. Voila'

It's easiest if you take a wheel off, even if the tire is on it.. Cut some cardboard and span the outer wheel surface on one side. Stick a tape measure through the center bore of the wheel to touch the cardboard at the back of the wheel. Now eyeball how much depth you have to the front surface of the wheel. It should be pretty close. This example is doing one side at a time, but the idea is the same.
Now with even more aplomb

Are you over thinking this? If the tires are the same size why would there be a problem swapping tires from rim to rim?
Laws aren't preventative measures. In other words, more laws won't prevent gun crime from happening.

Tire shop with a balancing machine will likely have a caliper to measure it.

Thanks everyone. Taking a tire off right now isn't an option. I'll have the shop look at it.

If you have stock rims, then you should be able to find the specs online.

The wheel diameter and width is often cast into the backside of the wheel, at least on factory wheels.
