Anybody got any experience pulling HOWA barrels to rechamber, or AI ?
Wondering if they are a hassle, or basically the same as many others...
Thanks!

Ingwe, 6 ft breaker with a 10lb hammer. All is well. Where are you thinking getting a new barrel from?

I have pulled a lot of them and many had to be cut to get them out. I take a .040" parting tool and run it in at the front of the receiver to take the pressure off the shoulder. After that you can unscrew them by hand. I was told by one of the reps at shot show about 20 years ago that they torque them in to 1,400 foot pounds. Why is anyone's guess. Maybe they are still mad about Hiroshima.
I have been told by some other smiths they have methods of pulling them without damage, but in my 50 years of gunsmithing I was only able to pull one without cutting the shoulder back. I then set the barrel in that .040", taking that much off the breach face and then come in with a reamer to re-set the chamber to proper depth and headspace.

Why, it is not a big deal, they are very good barrels and are well worth the little bit of effort

I’ve never had to part one, I use the Brownells barrel vise and action wrench. Get bbl good and tight with a wrap of drywall tape dusted in rosin and the action wrench tightened against the flat and drywall tape over the top of action. Have the handle at 12 o’clock and give it a good whack with a 3 foot brass bar...pops loose every time. And generally Howa barrels ARE pretty damnded good for a factory barrel.
