Any certain styles I need to look at or avoid? The safes are elevated now so I could run power into the bottom.

I use Golden Rods and the cheap dollar store dehumidifiers.

The combination of the 2 keeps the humidity level right at 45-50% which is the recommended level of humidity in the safe.

I have 2 of the temperature and humidity gauges - 1 in the safe, the other in the room with the safe. The rods can fail and a quick check of the 2 gauges will let you know.

The cheap dollar store dehumidifiers need to be checked at least once a month. You will be surprised at how much moisture they absorb even with a dehumidifying rod in the safe.

My understanding is that the Golden Rod isn't actually a dehumidifier. All it does is maintain a stable temperature in the safe, which prevents humidity from condensing into "sweat" on gun steel, which is what causes rust.

Strange, I live in the deep, dark South 90% humidity

My gun safes are in a concrete vault tornado room, no hvac.

Never had any rust.

Really?

Be even better if I didn’t need it.

Are your guns metal?

I have a golden rod along with an eva-dry rechargeable dehumidifier in the safe. The whole cellar is controlled by an AC powered dehumidifier.

I’ve used golden rods in several states, low and high humidity. Have had zero issues.

Another vote for the cheap dollar store dehumidifiers. Got 2 safes and they both have them. Although one of the safes also has a Goldenrod. Never had a problem with either safe so I've been wondering if I really need that Goldenrod.

You just wipe them down with an oil rag whenever you've handled them, right?

Same here lived near a beach for 35 years - 25-06 stood in the closet or laid under the bed no special treatment .
Blueing/Bore on it and many others is perfect .

Yep. Only my main safe has electricity and a Golden Rod. The other safe doesn't have electricity, and I never put a chemical dehumidifier in there, and no rust. Just like you said, wiped down before put back in.

I did get mildew on a sling that was in there, but no rust on steel.

I'm in western Washington where it rains more often than not. I have a safe in my detached garage. No dehumidifier for , six years, and zero rust. I always intended to get a Golden rod but never did, and I'm now beginning to realize I simply don't need one. I'm careful to wipe down guns before I put them back in the safe, if I've had them out in the rain. But other than that I don't do anything special.

+1 on the wipe downs. I also have a log book for all the guns and if a gun hasn't been out of the safe for 6 months it gets a wipe down and check over. Note the date in the log book for that gun so if it ain't getting used it gets another wipe down/ check 6 months later. That was when I had more safe queens so I had to be careful. Thinning everything out in retirement but it's nice knowing that you won't regret forgetting about anything in there.

You guys know how long it takes to wipe down all 3 guns I have?

Yeah, that might happen once a year.
