https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/galleries/14167512#Post14167512Went to the local gunshop to pickup a check for a consignment gun and had to leave with these. I haven't checked but the person in the gunshop said the Colt is 1960 production. My first Colt revolver. It looks like it was carried some and not shot much. I can still see blue in the grooves in the rifling and it locks up tight. The model 17 is from my favorite era of Smith & Wesson revolvers being a late 80s or early 90s gun. Square cylinder release, no lock, no MIM, no EDM and some of the best quality of all years in my opinion. This one looks like new. I would say 99.5%. I don't remember ever seeing in person one of this era in 4" underlug before. I think it is probably pretty rare. I suspect this probably came with the target finger groove wood grips from this time and not the pictured grips, but may be wrong. They also had a Model of 1989 that almost came home too, but I was way over my intended spending limit for the day!

I never could find a good deal at a pawn shop.
I swear some places must have free WiFi, and some guys sit out front of the doors posting on the fire with cash in hand. Just waiting for the Colts and Winchesters to approach.😂

Very nice pair....
The 17 should be a -7 made in the early 1990s....and probably did come with Combat grips...people strip them off all the time when they sell them as the grips alone will sell for $200.00.
I have one that looks just like that but is in .32 H&R Magnum from the same time period...was lucky in that the original Combats were still with the gun.

Holy Cow! What a great trip to the gun store!
Please get a bit more specific about the Model of 1989 that stayed behind.

The S&W is a 17-6. When I was young I saved up lawn mowing/welder's helper/grocery sacking money and bought brand new one of the early 617 6" under lug guns from this period. I thought that would be the ideal .22 revolver. Ended up not liking because the 6" barrel with the under lug and small .22 hole was too barrel heavy for me. The 4" version is about perfect.

The 1989 had some evidence of being of shot, but locked up tight. 5"

...I meant to type -6 and typed -7... The -7 was a 10 shot cylinder....

Love that Colt, 4" is the best looking length in those. Congrats.

Lightning,
I had been wanting a tight Python with a little carry wear so I could play with it without hurting the value but was having a hard time finding one priced at a level I could stomach. This one seemed priced really reasonably. And it was a 4", which is what I was wanting.
I remember the pawn shops were full of like new $300-$400 asking price Pythons out in the Permian Basin during the oil crash back in the 1980s. I always loved looking at them then but have never fired one.
