I grew bored with an old Mosin Nagant that I’ve owned for quite sometime and wanted to do something different with it. I opted to rebarrel and chamber it in 500 Smith&Wesson magnum. I started out with a green mountain bbl blank that I turned, contoured and chambered. Had to modify the receiver and magwell a bit but I got it to feed flawlessly. It actually shoots exceptionally well. Sorry that I only have a link to the picture. Also have a YouTube video of it as well if you’d like to check it out.

It has to be comfortable to shoot than the S&W Revolver in that caliber...

I watched the You Tube and it sounds like an interesting exercise. Mainly to D&T that action. Is the 8X57 bolt head better to base that on? Just thinking what I have that is a viable action to base a gun on? Thanks for sharing. Looks like fun. Be Well. RZ

It actually has quite a bit of recoil. With the revolver, you lose quite a bit of pressure through the cylinder gap and the rifle barrel uses every bit of the powder charge. The recoil is strange though with the faster burning pistol powder. Very abrupt.

The 8x57 is rimless, so a bushing would have to be made and silver soldered in place with some reworking of the extractor. I had very minimal work with the bolt and didn’t have to modify the bolt face at all. Just had to shorten the bolt face depth to accommodate the rim thickness of the 500 to make it headspace correctly. Also should add that there are some 8x57 rimmed variants.

Nope, I’m not a hunter. I just built it because I was bored with its factory setup and wanted to do something different. I’m sure it would work great for deer though. I have a bunch of people that want to buy it because it sits on the display case in the shop.
