We have a mature apple tree my father planted. He called it a pie apple tree. I planed a Wolf River tree this spring, no idea if it is the same.

What do the good bakers on the 'fire like for apple pie?

Hesitant to reply, Richard, since you specified good bakers... smile

That said, I almost always get Granny Smith apples for a pie.

Sorry to the detour.

Depends on where you live. Here in northeast SD Haralson grows just fine. Flavorful, not too sweet, described as a dual purpose apple. Also have a dwarf Fireside. About the same, a little sweeter and best about a week after the Haralsons. The Haralson apple was introduced by the Minnesota Horticulture Research Center decades ago which was the hint it would do well here.

Northern Spy, if you can find them. An old northeastern desert and pie variety.

Speaking of.....Daughters birthday pie. Kind of a tradition in our family. Pie instead of cake.

Tons of apples grown here,
any dish cooked with apples is likely to have some Granny's,
And one or two other varieties. Usually Winesap and something else.

We buy from the local packing house, pick them from bins.
$8 per 1/2 bushel.
Makes me sick to see them sold in the store by the pound.
A big Apple can go a pound.
+$1 for an apple?

Same for applesauce.
You want it good? Multiple varieties.
Throw a couple Golden Delicious in there if you want it sweet,
without adding too much sugar. That's how I make aple butter
for our diabetic friends. Not 0 carb, but lower.

Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!
