I saw two 99's in my local gunshop today and wanted more of an opinion than that of the seller. The first was a model c in .308 all in all vg. but looked like it had aftermarket checkering done to it for $440 canadian. The other was a model E that had a really light colored stock like birch or something for $380 canadian, It was vg+ but the color bugged me a little. Are these fair prices?

A well cared for 99c in 308 is a great rifle that will last a lifetime.

Prices for firearms are local. $440 canadian is about $300 US (right?) so its a good price in Oregon.

The guys in "99 country" may say that its a little high. But the real question is, do you want to spend $440 canadian to have a great all around hunting rifle. If so, buy it.

If you are collecting, maybe not.

Just my 2 cents.

If I was looking for a C or an E; I'ld ask, how ugly was the checkering on the C cuz $294.37 American ain't all that bad. If I had my drothers though, I'ld grab the E (also .308 ???) for $254.22 American.

Hey, I'm a rotary man, what can I say

Then again, its a buyers market, and getting better every day. If your not in a rush it may be better to speculate a while.

The checking looked very nice, it was definately done by a gunsmith! But I'm more of a collecter than hunter and if it isn't original I think twice. Did savage put out alot of E's in the lighter colored stock?

mad dog, those 99 prices seem a bit steep for the times you live in Canada these days. But, I'm not exactly in "99 country," so my perspective is a little different. Here, forty some miles from the Mexican border it's gotta have a bolt or an exposed hammer to move. 99s are few and far between, usually from the leavings of some snowbird or retiree. Got an E recently, in excellent condition, including that quaint blonde stock, for 185US$, and this is an area with about as lively and unfettered a firearms culture as you'll find in America today. ---jethrow---

I bought several Models 99E in .243 and .308 at the Ramkota gunshow in Sioux Falls, SD, for an average of $200 with cheap scopes/bases/rings. SD isn't Model 99 country, but MN used to be. I was the only person buying them early on Saturday, but nobody that I could see was holding onto guns to see if they could make a better deal later. I was glad that 260Remguy came along to be my pack mule!

Hey Bear,

I think that not only did Minnesota used to be "99 country" - it still is! But you have to get up into the northern half of the state. The southern half is shotgun with slugs (for the most part) for big game (which down there is whitetail deer). But when you get up north of the grassland/farm area and into timber country the "99" is still popular. We have a healthy whitetail population, black bear are increasing dramatically, and moose by permit. The popular "99" calibers are: .300 & .303 Savage and .308 & .358 Winchester.

As for your $200 Model E's - good for you! I have not seen anything like that lately. Guess I better head far south to gun shows!

I always buy a number of good rifles at the Ramkota show. Everything that I bought was pretty much original, no recoil pads or extra holes. 'Looks like I've got enough for "guide tips" for a at least a couple of years.

If I was going to spend good money on a Savage it would always be a 99EG or a 99F (circa 1950-60) other than the really early collectors and only then if I was a collector, otherwise the EG and F are the quality guns.
